For the price of a Tracfone, you can get a Verizon pre-paid disposable phone with $10 of included time. I used the Verizon phone with few problems during a 2-week section hike in MD & PA. I have used a Tracfone previously, just not on the AT. My gripe with both is the lack of a USB port to transfer photos. You have to use MMS at extra cost.

At Pine Grove General Store, Verizon users need to cross the street and stand by the little tree to get a signal. ATT users can remain on the porch.

I bought an unlocked LG Incite (ATT) phone with a T-Mobile SIM for use this year in NJ & NY. I'll post how it performed after my hike.
