WHOO - HOO!! My grandmother was a HUGE Texan - she sent my mom a box of Texas dirt while my dad was stationed at Alconbury. My mom refused to go into the delivery room until the box was under the table! I was a breech baby, too.

I was in Northern Germany for 3.5 years. We went to the UK for sunshine and warm weather, believe it or not. Had a great time - natives were wonderfully wonderful, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland!

I get a pay raise with "Honorary Membership", right? More good weather days on the trail? Better zero days? Something? Anything? ;)

My husband and I are planning a 2012 NOBO thru. We don't have trail names and have never ever done anything like this before. We are taking this year 2011 to get some miles under our belts and get in shape. Coming from North Dakota I have no xp with mountains so the AT will be the MOST challenging thing I have ever done in my life. Excitement can't even begin to describe how I am feeling right now. Only 11 months! Hoping to meet a lot of good people and learn what I am capable of. :sun

I'm thinking April 3rd, as I am released from active duty on the 2nd.
Never been to Amicalola, but I'm a traditionalist, will likely do the approach.

Currently in Afghanistan, tired of military life after 9 years, want to spend time in the outdoors and actually be able to 'enjoy it.' Finally registered and have been telling many people this is my goal, hopefully this will push me past dreaming to actually getting on the trail. I'm really excited about this, and have not been this excited about anything in a long time.

Good Luck to all !

Trail Name: Fozzie Bear (Fozzie, for short)

Estimated Start Date: mid MARCH some time
Approach Trail: sure why the heck not!

Reason:
For the past few years wherever I have hiked I have carried my rubber chicken, henry, with me. He has hiked all over the world and done all sorts of crazy things. It is a great conversation piece and I always get great looks, and henry likes adventures. So this past weekend we were hiking the presidential range in NH and someone came over to me and called me Fozzie and explained why. Very fitting! for those who may not know fozzie bear is a muppet who apparently carries a rubber chicken all over with him.

I tried to hike the trail in 2007 but had health problems. I started feeling bad the second night on the trail and started running a very high fever. I left the trail to see a doctor and found that I had pneumonia. While I was being treated for Pneumonia they found that my heart was not work very well. This started a long series of test and seeing many different Doctors. They ended up having to do a four way by pass. Then later they had to add a stint and then a pace maker. I seem to be in fairly good shape again. So now I once more have Springer fever. I have start working out with weights. I have also started checking out the new gear to try and lighten my backpack load. I will also start doing some long distant walking. Later when the weather here in Texas cools off I will start hiking with a backpack and testing new gear.

I hope to do much better this time. Is there any one out there that would care to start with me? I plan to start fairly slow and not count miles but hours in the beginning. I know for a while I will be taking a lot of rest breaks until I get my trail legs. Anyone is welcome to hike with me, in fact I would enjoy the company.

Hope to see all of you out there on the trail.

Start Date - Not Sure Yet - Somewhere between March 21 - April 15
Approach Trail - I plan on it
I'm still not sure if I'll be able to get the wife's permission to go, but I'm hoping so.

My trail name is derived from a week long hiking trip when I was in Boy Scouts. About a month or so before we left, during a camping trip, my Senior Patrol Leader took me out during a "friendly" game of volleyball. I sprained my knee and had to wear a brace. So my troop leaders made me the lead guy to dictate the pace for everyone else. I like the name because I'm not in it to win it, I'll just keep the pace.

Mental Bird - I'm not from Florida, originally, but I went to college in St. Augustine. My wife and I both worked for the Mouse in Orlando. My wife's family is from New Smyrna Beach, and my folks retired to Clermont.

Trail name: Bread or Digger I get called both. Direction: NOBOEst. start date: sometime in February when the forecast looks ok. Approach trail: not again. It looks like I'm gonna be selling my business, so I will be back at it. Instead of piecing it together I want to take my time and do the trail in one whole straight line. I rushed through it before. My goal is to potentially hike it with my luxurious 6 man tent. It would make for some fantastic camp time. Of course finding spots might be horrid. As for my hike plan, it's to have no plan. Having done the trail before I'd like to do things I missed before; aquablaze the Shenandoah , see gulf Hagas, do some fishing, spend an entire day on a warm rock and not care once of miles, or phony goals!Although starting in February is horrible as it was last time, I do want to stay away from the crowds of party seekers. February starters tend to Ne more laid back, older, and strong hikers. I am a strong hiker, steady hiker, and won't have a broken foot this time. I hope it's more fulfilling for sure. I think I have put up the latest start date I have seen here. I am a college student, thus need to finish up with graduation before I get to move out from school and head to Georgia. I don't get the chance to go hiking or backpacking too much anymore because I race road bikes for the school and I ride every chance I get. I look forward to having a huge escape from society for at least 3 months next year as I head up the trail!

The extent of my training will likely be a weekly run to strengthen my feet and legs to the continual pounding of walking/running. I will be coming off of a 3 month long road racing season nice and tired of cycling, so it should be an excellent opportunity to hike. I am doing this as my last hoorah before getting sucked into the rat race they call work in the US.

ReNew
07-24-2011, 08:59
Trail name: ReNew
Direction: NOBO
Start date: March 3rd
Approach: What's 9 miles?

Three weeks ago I started planning/prepping for "My Hike" which is Seven months away. I hope to be taking my first steps onto The AT from Springer Mountain on March 3rd of 2012. Obviously I will be hiking north. My goal is to reach Mt. Katahdin in one piece(or two) before October of 2012.

Above I mentioned planning, not as in planning my every move on the trail, just gear planning. For example: The pack I plan to carry is 3 lb. and the tent is 3 lb. I will have shaved 7-8 lbs off by switching from my old gear. And Yes i am carrying a "just in case" tent. I refuse to plan the trail part of this hike. I know where the trail starts and I know where the trail ends. I am very excited about the adventures to come. I know this will be a very mentally challenging trek but not knowing what lies ahead, at the top of an up or the bottom of a down, will keep me going. Oh and some trail magic! (Like maybe a bunch of trail angels covering the bills in Denver) JK JK JK!!!

I live in Denver, Colorado and am from St Louis, Missouri. My long distance assistance, "BaseCamp" will be in Kansas City, Missouri.

I will journal as I go through a TrailJournal website (not sure if I can include the site here).

Definitely not back to 100%, but the doctors say I never will be.

Hi Joe! Hope to see you out there next spring!! Thank you for your service. I am a Marine Corps brat and both my parents are from Kanawha County WV. I'm from Waynesboro area VA so I can't wait to get to SNP. Even though I'm leaving Springer earlier (March 01) I'm sure you will pass me eventually bwahahaha. Stay safe and see ya at Springer 2012!

Hey Scratch~
I'd be more than happy to start out with ya, 40 y/o female here, but I'm never done anything like this before. I have a few miles and some cool places in SNP VA to my name but that's about it. Eager to learn but gonna pace myself. I'm completely sure you will pass me on day 2 -- if not sooner! Anyway, feel free to add me to your friends if it makes your parents happier :D Hope to see ya up there either way! 2012 whoo hoo!!!!!

Trail Name - darkage
Direction - NOBO
Estimated Start Date - March 15 (Seen alot of people leaving on this date, i might try for more of a late april) Picked the 15th for trail days ...

I've been a long section hiker for the last 4-5 years, hiking previously on day trips and general camping. I just spend 3 weeks in south california doing some backpacking getting ready for 2012 ... I'm bout as ready i can get without just packing and heading out right now ... won't be long, soon enough. Look for my brother and I as well as a 90% chance you'll see us with my dog koa ... Still up in the air on that, not cause of the dog .. but my needs for services along the way would be handicaped, but my goal is see what i can see but never waste time in towns, hostels are for showers and clothes and move on ... reason i carry a tent, i'm gonna use it the whole trip .. see ya out there!

I really enjoyed that discovery Channel "Curiousity" with Stephen Hawking! Approximately 30 minutes afterwards, did anyone catch the special with Hawking? Not referring to the roundtable discussion but the hour long special where Hawking went further into his theories? I can not recall the name of that show. It was interesting though.

Sorry to stray off topic

Not "officially" part of the White blazes. Me - done it before. Not worried about it, other than it may take me a day to complete, which will throw my "official" start date off by a day or so. I'm determined to start on my Mom's birthday. I might not need that day, but who knows................
