When you are on the trail who do you love to listen to and jam to the most? I love to find all types of new tunes so please share.

I enjoy Tesla, Led Zeppelin, Royal Bliss, Eric Clapton, etc. the most. Especially in the mountains! My first appalachian trail experience will be this year and I can't wait to crank them up there

Wilco, Son Volt, Old Crow Medicine Shoe, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Waits, Jayhawks, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Greatful Dead, Yonder Mountain String Band, Widespread Panic, Steve Earle, Old 97s, Scud Mountain Boys ..... golly, there's a whole bunch more on my little I-Pod Mini.
There might be nothing better than hiking 20 miles, eating a bowl of mac n cheese, another bowl of something, a shot of rum and my i-pod mini in a tent somewhere cool.

For the first time ever I will be taking my ipod with me in September. I'll be hiking alone the first week until I meet up with a friend for an additional two weeks of hiking. I thought it might be nice to have my run tunes along with me. So when the going gets tough I will be listening to Big Girls don't cry, tighten up, Do it well, run on , move along and seven day fool. Just to get me through the tough times of course. And then my Ipod runs the gammett from classical to eminem

I never bring an electronic music device along. I do, though, sing to myself sometimes when I'm hiking alone (I never inflict this on anyone else I might be hiking with -- only alone). I did this spontaneously a couple hours into the very first day on my very first backpacking trip. A Neil Young song, it was. It's hard to generalize, though, about what songs are likely to pop into my head.

Some people use bearbells. I sing to let the wildlife know I'm around.

And it's comforting, somehow.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'll check 'em out!

Papa D and music man, I couldn't agree more with Neil Young. Thats the ultimate mountain music.

Anyone know some real good bluegrass groups? Thats a whole new genre for me, but I'd like to get into the good stuff.

Why is it that all discussions turn to Bacon? Maybe it really means something....:-?

But all kidding aside, and in spite of naysayers on other threads, the only real answer here is Phish.

I never listen to music while hiking. Probably a generational thing, but it just seems out of place to me. That said, I'd suggest the Tobasco Donkeys, and definitely Braid's "The Hiker Song" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW8xOuigsvo).

IF I bring music/radio (which I have only done once) I will just throw on Pandora on my phone and connect it to my Motorola EQ5 portable bluetooth speaker (amazing). Lightweight, don't have to have annoying headphones in your ears, etc. Music selection will vary depending on Pandora station, typically throw on some sort of blues or Ray LaMontage type station and everything turns out well.

To be clear, I hiked for years without an I-pod or any such thing - heck, when I thru hiked, I think that the walkman was around, but I didn't use one. I too love the sounds of nature and spend 23 1/2 hours a day in the woods enjoying them. Sometimes, before I sleep though, music is wonderful, comforting and just plain fun - I disturb no-one with my tiny headphones in my tent or occasionally in the corner of a shelter.

If I may suggest one myself, check out Tesla's Five Man Acoustic Jam. Especially if you like bluegrass. Its like hearing the rock and bluegrass worlds come together. The acoustic guitar talent in unreal and Jeffs voice just completes it all.

I have a San Disk MP3 player, the only one I would find that works on a single triple-a battery, and its broken. I can only play songs randomly, so when a good one comes along I need to listen to it a few times............could be weeks before I get to hear it again.

Faster songs help me on the "UPS" - last section hike, U2 singing Helter Skelter, possible new record, like 8x in a row.

I'm with Map Man, no iPod or other electronic device. I was intrigued, however, by one of this year's thru-hikers (Renaissance) I met at Pocosin Cabin, who was enjoying a simple AM/FM radio, in part to hear several sermons on Sundays.

The Grateful Dead are Not played out. They're classic. But there are many good bands to heighten the outdoors experience, I look at nature as art, and good music can sometimes make it that much more beautiful. Bluegrass is a definite, it's almost like an ideology or state of mind when listening to that picking and harmonizing, that music came from the hills and it fits right in. But the music that really makes what I'm seeing much more beautiful isn't necessarily all of that pickin'. I enjoy mellow electronic music in the woods, something with a lounge feel. Could listen to Radiohead if you were in that state of mind. Listening to the sounds of nature itself is plenty rewarding and what I prefer to do 95% of the time, but when the timing is right, the sun is out, the breeze is grasping your body, and your senses are on overload that moment can be heightened with the right selection of tunes. It's certainly more of a introverted type of action though, I wouldn't necessarily do it when a hiking partner is around, I enjoy my mind but social interaction is the spice of life.

Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Death Cab, The Postal Service, Modest Mouse, The Dead, The Chemical Brothers, Dave, CCR, Bela Fleck, Clapton, Zepplin, Skynard… That covers the mainstream stuff.
