I am planning a LT e2e this summer starting possibly the last week of
July the 25th ish. NOBO. anyone else planning on being out there at that time?
I'm also considering starting at rt near Rutland, hiking north to Canada, then catch a ride back to rt4 and end up in Williamstown?

Just out of curiosity, why are you thinking about flip-flopping the LT?

I think the best time to hike the Long Trail end to end would be August and September, obviously August will be warmer and September will have less bugs...July is till hot and buggy in places and very end of Sept or Oct means cold and snow in places.

I did the trail last year in July - it was really nice - we did have a little heat wave (for Vermont - temps in the low 80s) early on - later in the month it was nice and cool - there was also plenty of water. The cooler temps are great in mid August to mid - September but on the trail's northern parts, water is typically harder to source - naturally this all depends on the particular year (wet/dry, hot/cold) but I would suggest a window between July 15 and August 15 as a very good bet. We did the trail in 24 days which is about average - as a solo hiker, I might have done it in closer to 19-20 days.

September would be perfect for temps but you would probably have some dry creeks and streams and unless you really like the chill, you'd probably skip the great swimming holes

monkeywrench ,the reason why i'm considering a flip flop is because i hiked from williamstown to rt 4 two years ago. it would be just to start on new trail i haven't been to yet. i'm 80% sure i'll just start again at williamstown.

IMHO Early-mid September. Fewer bugs, less traffic, better temps the only negative is the occasional reports of lack of water depending on the season (I've never run into it personally).

A lot of people like to follow the color and do a SOBO. I prefer the opposite.

FYI, that's exactly what I did in '07 (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=6248).
