Jarreds Gap to Neels Gap closed to bear stealing hikers food supply on more than a few occasions. Park Service has put a Ridgerunner since Friday.

Yeah, the bear has figured out if he shakes the bear cables hard enough the cheap bags pop. He raided woods hole the night before I passed by on my way into Neel's. The hikers who were there said he was undeterred by rocks and sticks and yelling, and that he came back 3 times threwout the night getting his nose within 2 feet of one guys hammock.

I was in Slaughter Gap 2 weeks ago and the folks at Vogel State park said they were having frequent reports of 2 diff bears raiding camp sites within the park. We camped just past the Duncan Ridge, Coosa intersection and didn't have any problems. There was a group of hikers that stayed over the ridge from us and they said they saw one at a distance but didn't have any problems. Hopefully they will settle down quickly.

When food is the issue, bears never settle down. :-?

Hey just trying to pass the information from the trail.

And for the record, NPS didn't close it until the 16th morning and not the AT GA Club. The information was premature and quoted wrong then what was posted at Woody stating closed from Woody to Neels.

It wasn't the NPS that closed it either, it was the U.S. Forest Service supervisor for the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. And the news alert he was quoting was from the Georgia AT club, the club doesn't close trails. The order was issued on the 15th.

Bear canisters. Yes, they're heavy. Yes, they work. No sense in someone getting hurt.

Wow thats 10-11 miles North of Neels Gap. Looks like they didn't use the bear cables at the shelter though.
