Anyone know of the cell service in the Davenport Gap/I-40 area? Or the northern Smokies?

I tried a couple of years ago and didn't have any reception until we got out of the gorge, heading up towards Knoxville. I have T-Mobile, not the greatest for coverage...

Three years ago, I had pretty good service at Davenport Gap. Then, a little later, I sent my wife a picture message at I-40. We have Verizon.

I get reception at Standing Bear Farm and at Big Creek Ranger Station. It's not great, but I got through. With Verizon.

A friend with T-Mobile has nothing once he gets a few miles west of of Asheville.

Thanks. Is there still a payphone near the ranger station at Big Creek?

I have Sprint and it doesnt pick up there. I see folks at Mt Camerer all the time with active cell phones.

Might be a tad bid difficult to get reception right at Davenport Gap or I-40. It is a pretty deep gorge that the river cuts through the mountain there.

The reception isn't great, but I was able to get through from the Ranger Station after a few tries. If you can't get signal in one spot, move a few hundred feet and try again.

Unfortunately I didn't notice if there's a pay phone there.
