I'm honored to say that the esteemed ATPC (Appalachian Trail Privy Committee) has asked me to compose a list (http://tjforrester.com/2011/04/24/appalachian-trail-hike-privy-survival/) of safety suggestions that should quell any reservations about using the facilities.

you forgot one.
if theirs a rock your useing to hold the door open cause its impossible to breath otherwise, and if theirs a busy road in veiw, as in the pavillion privys at port clinton, act like your just sitting repairing the door hasp.

if your suddenly aware that the clearence you so despratly require is possibly lacking but you worry moveing to check could cause contact with the great pyramid of sleeza, dont flinch. hold steady. your commited. escape is impossable. you must concentrate on ice water filling the privy. as it creeps higher, you feel better.

Make sure the floor is built really well, it sucks when you fall thru.

^ It's imperative to bring a bandanna for breathing in the summer months.

I once dropped a bomb in a privy and ice water splashed back up and hit me. My worst nightmare.

I heard that the bears are starting to crawl down in the privies to attack people from below. Be careful...

I would rather have a bear bite my ass then a black widow!

So that's what the recent reports of "brown bears" in the East are all about.

During the swummer months, a quick spray of DEET helps keep the biting things away from the boys - it is NO FUN to get bit on the family junk while doing your drop-off.
Nothing more painful then trying to hike with 2 or 3 bites on them!

no. no one does that. deet on my genitals? yeah. right. spiders in privies? no. nothing lives down there. not on top of the pile anyway. to freash and hot. nobody wants that. it aint no ones home. snakes aint there. just some casting worms and a few weirdo bugs way down where its broke down and sterile dirt being made. spiders like the inside of the outhouse but not the pit part. and never use a privy you dont want to. if its a restricted area, hike to where you can poop free. it only ever takes a moment to walk out of a area being repatriated or protected. privis suck unless its utterly downpouring cold rain. utterly downpouring warm rain dont get me inside one of those germ transfer stations .

One of the inherent risks of the great pyramid of sleeza.

Nearly all the posts before mine list much of the reasons I don't use privies any more. There's a few more reasons, but too early in the morning... Nasty, nasty, nasty....

The trail system, shelters and privy's were not intended to handle so many people.

Try to only poop on zero days in town, remembering not to trust a fart
