View Full Version : Original hat ideas?

I was using a ball cap but it doesn't protect my ears or back of the neck.

Also, I was hoping for something with a more distinctive look.

I was thinking of a western hat, but would the bit in the back bump up against the backpack?
On that note, wouldn't a three-corner hat (pirate hat) work best, since the back part is turned up flat?

What do y'all think? Has anyone hiked in a pirate hat?:banana

Just can't go wrong with a conical Asian hat. Even that would scare the pants off Cap'n Jack Sparrow

I wear something similar but it doesn't have a removeable cape. It's very practical and can keep your wet rain jacket hood off of your head (though not comfortably, really - it just keeps your oily sweat from ruining the water repellency of the hood).
You can also spray the underside of the brim and the cape with permethrin to keep most insects away without having to reapply deet every 2-4 hours.

Good enough for early 19th century explorers..it is good enough for you!!!

Pair it with a stylish and dapper voyageur style toque for cold weather!

(Being serious, I use a boonie-style hat. Wide for sun protection, keeps off the rain, $10 or so at the surplus store. Been using one regularly since 1999!)

How about that! I hike in a boonie hat too. Picked it up at a local surplus store for ten bucks a few summers ago and it's been my favorite hat ever since. Keeps the ticks off my head and the sun off my face and neck, can't seem to damage it at all despite numerous rainstorms/submersions/branch whacks, and the digital camo is pretty sweet-looking.

So where do I get a tricorn hat? Can I buy a felt costume one and just spray it with scotchguard?

I know it's not original but I bought a sunhat (from Amazon) for the PCT and there were no pack issues.

I just have to share 2 of my favorite camping hats, tho these usually only come car camping.

The first one was a gift from my grandmother, and it always gets a smile/laugh from anyone who walks by.

The second is just great for keeping a comrade warm in those whistling VT winters.

Either way, the only way to know your head gear is sufficiently unique is to walk by a few people and wait for one to say "nice hat!"

Put a bandana over your gourd and hold it in place with your ballcap.

In Australia they hang corks from the brim of their hats to ward off pesky flies! Might come in handy in Maine!

Just curious. . . why wear a hat in the green tunnel? I haven't hiked in the sun more than 15 minutes on the AT.
