Just wondering, who all is planning to start heading SoBo in early September? Think I might give it a go... Always wanted to do a SoBo.

I have until January to do something fun (school starts), and I was thinking maybe I'd go SoBo. Maybe just for a month. We'll see- just take my time and wander my way down. Is anyone else starting around then?

Have you ever thought about hiking the Long Trail?

September is supposedly the best time to hike it.

I'm just now starting to educate myself on the LT as my "big" hike next year I'm hoping to do the LT sobo and keep on the AT until Pen Mar Park on the MD/PA border.

I like to hike a lot, college got in the way, so I left. Be on the BMT tomorrow, from there, who knows?

Congrats!

Be sure to take maps because you will surely need them and I found a compass reduced a lot of anxiety.

There are numerous trail intersections in the unblazed wilderness areas that are unmarked and one place a sign clearly points 180* in the wrong direction.

The first 80 miles or so are blazed as good as the AT though...

I am very seriously considering the LT too (well, as serious as I can be about hiking...) But we'll see! I also thought about the Camino de Santiago in Spain, but I really don't want to spend money!!!

Well you can certainly start it SOBO in Sept but winter weather will catch up to you in a hurry.

I just hate winter hiking with postholing in snow and cold and long nights.
I'm sure I'll love the JMT this summer with the 4th highest snowfall on record. :D

Shiver. I did the Smokies in the first few days of March. We had what, five feet of snow? Ugh.

The cold later on will be a rude awakening coming from FL.
