I saw this fotog in an old 1973 Backpacker magazine and have to share it here. Forerunner of the Aarn system of packs? You decide. Medicine Man, add your two cents, please. It was a breakthrough in the forward-lean controversy. Or a surgical brace after a severe spinal injury? Don't study the actual packs too much or you'll wonder why they are so small. They look like little daypacks. Here's the link:

And then go to page 101 or Search Bal Pak.

Natural Balance was the first company in the US (I believe) to do this back in the late 80's, I've met Aarn Tate and he makes good stuff, just not for me.

I used (I'm using) an Aarn Natrual Balance pack for my 2011 thru hike attempt. I made it to Erwin before being forced off of the trail due to an ankle injury. I plan on returning to the trail May 25th and still hope to finish my thru hike this year. I've been really pleased with the pack thus far. It's a bit hard on the "eyes" but truly is an extremely comfortable pack. My pack weight was 47lbs when leaving Amicalola Falls back in March and my back, shoulders and waist have felt zero discomfort to this point. The only problem I had with the pack was a tear that occurred in the hip belt. It took one phone call and a replacement belt was shipped next day delivery. You can't beat that for service.
