Just wanted to see who all was section hiking this year. I hiked from Davenport to Hot Springs in April. Hoping to hike to Erwin from Hot Springs this fall sometime. Heading north little by little.

05-11-2011, 17:19
February:Harper's Ferry to Waynesboro, PA
April: Springer to Franklin
June: Dennis Cove to Damascus

05-11-2011, 17:30
Well, you already know my plans for June, but here we go:

June: Erwin to Damascus (this is definite and will complete the AT from Springer to Lehigh Gap in PA thus far)

Sept: Hopefully, first half of Tahoe Rim Trail (postponed from Sept of 2010)

Oct or Nov: North from Lehigh Gap for two weeks

I usually try to do one or two trips on the AT, aiming to complete it before I retire, and another trip "someplace else". There are just so many great places to see, I have a tough time, and no desire to just ignoring everything but the AT. :-)

05-11-2011, 17:36
Just finished my SOBO this year sectioning PA and MD to HF

05-11-2011, 17:41
Headed to Fontana to Damascus in about 3 weeks.

05-11-2011, 19:15
Winding Stair Gap to Fontana Dam the 3rd week of May with my daughter, Sunshine, continuing from where we left off last year.

While I love hiking with my daughter, I'm definitely covering less ground on my annual section hike, to the point where I'm not going to meet my 40-year target to cover the entire AT! Oh well. Guess I'll have to change my signature.

Heading to Harpers Ferry next Friday and hiking south to Rockfish Gap. Woo-hoo.

05-12-2011, 11:11
Went out in Feb to hike in the SNP and last weekend north of Front Royal. 4 more hikes between summer and fall all between Harpers Ferry and the Northern SNP (none are more than a couple of days). This will complete the southern half of the AT for me.

05-12-2011, 12:07
First section from Springer to I40 was completed in 1995. Now that I'm retired, I'll be starting at I40 approximately June 25 and hiking north to first snow.

05-12-2011, 12:08
Correction - starting MAY 25!!!

05-12-2011, 12:18

Doing Fontana to the NOC with the Scout Troop this year - first week of Aug - southbound for a change. Better way to get a good place to stay overnight the last night before coming back to FL the next day, plus we can legally travel back in 1 day, instead of having to break it up into two days.

05-12-2011, 12:55
Springer Mt to GA state line in September.

05-12-2011, 22:12
Did a weekend hike - Duncannon - Pine Grove Furnace SP two weeks ago

June - Damascus to Pearisburg

Fall - PenMar - Pine Grove Furnace SP

05-12-2011, 22:25
Part of SNP middle of July with my two boys and possible friend and her son.

However, it looks like she might back out. If that happens, I think I want to spend more time and do the entire park. I think the boys (12/14) would get a kick out of saying they backpacked over 100 miles (rather than the 50 planned). If she doesn't go, I have 9 days to hike...

05-12-2011, 22:45
Leaving in July from Williamstown, Ma. and heading for Baxter.

05-13-2011, 08:28
Heading North from Caledonia SP to Swatara Gap beginning June 3rd.

05-13-2011, 17:48
The wife and I will only have time for a shorter one this year. Crawford Notch to Pinkham Notch, or the other way around, is about all we'll get to do on the AT.

I've already done an end to end of the C+O Canal and hope to get the Great Alleghey Passage done this year too.

05-13-2011, 22:06
Slightly off topic, but
April 29-May 11, Springer to Standing Indian including approach trail DONE
June 5-June 12, bike C&O canal, Cumberlad MD to Washington DC, 185 mi. PACKED
August 2- August 13, Isle Royal NP, Rock Harbor to Windigo to Rock Harbor

05-14-2011, 19:50
I'll be out late June (after the 21st) to cover Culver's Gap to NY17a (north New Jersey). Maybe mid-July heading north from Bear Mountain Bridge or Harper's Ferry for a week or so. Beyond that, it's just hoping to be able to slip out for weekend hikes in PA, south of Duncannon.

05-14-2011, 23:07
The JMT is on my list in mid-August, but I'm hoping to get a week to 10 days on the AT before then. My NOBO hike has me 6 mi south of the MA border. Started from Amicalola in '08.

05-15-2011, 00:16
I'm hiking Damascas, VA to Harper's Ferry starting June 1st :)

In April, I hiked Duncannon to Harpers Ferry - read about it here:

05-20-2011, 12:28

I completed the July hike (Arden Valley Rd to the 112/7 junction North of Kent), and had a great time.

The "???" looks like it will be the 4 state challenge (except I'll be doing it over a weekend instead of a 24 hour period) in November unless the weather does not cooperate. If that happens it'll just be something local here in VA.

08-24-2011, 12:23
Elk Pen parking area to NY Rte. 22 in late September/early October.

08-24-2011, 13:27
I'm also on a 20 year plan (in my 5th year!). Here are my 2011 stats so far:

8 hikes
96.5 miles
12.1 average miles / hike

Started at Springer last year and did a number of sections NOBO last year and this year. At 56 years old - this is really fun ! Next month - I'll do a section finishing at Roan Mountain. Done about 375 miles so far. Even though I have a good bit of outdoor experience - seems like it has taken me this far to really figure out what to do and what I need and what is not really necessary. At this point, I (almost) consider myself an ultra-lighter. The light pack really makes the hiking enjoyable. The best miles have been when my son could join me. Hope to do Roan Mountain to Damascus later this year (if everything falls into place). Good luck to all.

Went from Deep Gap, NC to Fontana in May.
Went from Atkins/Exit 54 off I-81 to Damascus 2 weeks ago.
667 miles complete. On about a 20 year pace.

09-04-2011, 11:35
Hoping to cover my last section south of Pinkham Notch -- Fontana Dam to Max Patch Road -- the first week of October if I can get shelter reservations. It's looking as if I won't be able to take off to hike in 2012 due to a variety of family obligations, which will put my completion year out to 2015 or so. Someday I'll be able to take some time to backpack other long-distance trails!

09-04-2011, 23:12
Went from I-40 to Hot Springs in 2008, Hot Springs to Erwin in 2009, Unico Gap to Standing Indian 2010, Erwin to US 19 in 2010, New Found Gap to I-40, 2010, Amacollia Falls to Neals Gap, 2011, ( side trip to I 40 to Hot Springs for a friend in 2011) US 19 - Damscus VA in 2011. Just need to finish from Standing Indian to New Found Gap and will be done with everything in GA, NC and Tenn. Hopefully will be doing from Standing Indian to Fontana this fall. Start in Damascus July 1st 2012 if the Rapture has not happened and we still have some semblance of the United States present. I figure at my pace, I should completed the AT in 20 years. If I had my choice, I would be hiking RIGHT NOW.

09-05-2011, 00:12
On a 50 year plan, 42 years in so far so I had better step it up. Going out in October for a couple days in VA, don't know where yet. I have 3 short fill-in hikes to complete the southern half of the AT.

09-05-2011, 00:26
11 days from now I'll be boarding the first of 3 planes to get to the trail(I have to be the absolute furthest from the trail) And then I will be spending 3 wonderful weeks hiking Springer to Fontana :D

09-05-2011, 08:37
Starting my Section hike of VA. Harper's Ferry to Swift Run Gap 9/24 to 10/1. Looking for companion to section hike with and shuttle cars for this 112 mile trip. We have 8 days to cover this mileage, which is not blistering, but just comfortable.

09-13-2011, 13:29
Section hiking PA southbound, Palmerton to Hamburg, starting in 8 days (9/21 to 9/25), with Gloucester. We usually go in October, but have been plagued by storms the last few years (Hannah, Nicole), so planned the trip earlier to avoid hurricanes (hopefully).

09-13-2011, 13:50
Harpers Ferry to Ashby Gap this past June.

09-14-2011, 23:12
Headin south Atkins VA to Gatlinburg TN last part of sept. Does anyone know where the sobo thru's are?

09-15-2011, 13:54
Headin south Atkins VA to Gatlinburg TN last part of sept. Does anyone know where the sobo thru's are? They will be pretty spread out by now, with the first ones finishing up in late September. I ran into a bunch of them in late October near Erwin a few years ago.

09-21-2011, 14:38
Last part of Springer to Woody this weekend (are you really supposed to section this section???) Taking my son for his first steps on the AT... good times!

09-21-2011, 15:13
Did from Great Barrington, MA to Franchonia Notch, NH 6/12/11 to 7/12/11.

11-22-2011, 11:47
The "???" looks like it will be the 4 state challenge (except I'll be doing it over a weekend instead of a 24 hour period) in November unless the weather does not cooperate. If that happens it'll just be something local here in VA.
Did most of this section a week ago. Actually started in Harpers Ferry and hiked to Pen-Mar County Park. I of course walked down to the MD/PA border so I could at least say I bagged MD. Out of all of the sections I have done so far that was the easiest terrain. Tons of people out between Harpers Ferry and Annapolis Rocks that weekend too. Neat section though.

11-22-2011, 14:58
Covered Winding Stair Gap to Fontana Dam (http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=364109) with my daughter back in May. I went back in early October to bag Fontana Dam to Max Patch Road (http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=364142) under blue skies, my last section south of Pinkham Notch in New Hampshire. Of course, my wife has now informed me that I cannot backpack again until I take her to Paris for our long-deferred 25th wedding anniversary present to each other, so it looks like I won't get to Maine until 2013, and finish up in Fall 2015.

11-22-2011, 20:58
Hiking at a leisurely pace in Shenandoah NP - starting Friday (day after Thanksgiving) at Swift Run Gap, hiking north to Compton Gap which I'm planning to reach Tuesday. This all presumes a successful hitch Friday morning from Compton to Swift Run.

11-22-2011, 23:35
I still have Springer to NOC on my plate for this year but I'm thinking of possibly starting it on New Years Day & Hiking into the SORuck?

11-23-2011, 13:45
This past year i was able to hike the sections from Springer mtn GA, thru Hot Springs. I skipped the Smokeys (i'll pick up the GSMNP next year). I made some you tube videos along the way, I have made five of my section hikes, and 45 or so of AT places along the way. Let me know what you think....

11-23-2011, 22:36
My son and I are just getting started so we still have a ways to go yet.
April - Unicoi - Dicks Creek, GA with his troop
October - Springer to Horse Gap with his Venturing crew.

11-24-2011, 22:14
Started on July 20, 2011 at North Adams, Ma. and summitted Katahdin on September 25. It took ten years but I've finished it.

11-26-2011, 10:49

So far, Bland, VA to Franconia Notch, short of 100 miles in VT had to skip due to the hurricane this year.

Usually go out for 10-12 days in the Spring then in the Fall, would like to start getting a 3rd hike in each year. I go South in the Spring and North in the Fall

Did the next section from Deep Gap to NOC back in October. We got snowed on the Wednesday night, our first night out and walked in snow for two days until it warmed up in to the 60's by saturday with cloudless skies. Our best experience on the AT with the two weather extremes and the adventure of the snow. Can't wait to go back for next section. See my post on the Black Creek Trail.

01-16-2012, 13:52
My wife and I are leaving early April and will do half the trail this year (Springer to Harpers Ferry) and then finish the second half next year. We just wanted a more leisurely pace so we can enjoy the trail more fully. This way we'll also have the option to continue on if we wish.
