Have any of you read anything about this story? Or seen his TJ? He is suppose to be the oldest perrson to ever hike the AT. I think Earl was 80 when he did his last AT thru hike.

Cimmaron or something like that....

My wife and I met and talked with him 2 weeks ago between Little Laurel and Jerry Cabin shelters, just north of Allen's Gap.

We tried to engage him in a short conversation but he didn't have a lot to say so we just eased on.

I've read that he is very engaging but I guess at 88 sometimes talking uses too much energy. There are a couple of threads here on WB about him. Just Search Cimarron

Wow... we must have in the exact same vicinity that day, 10-K, 'cause I ran into him about one mile south of Jerry Cabin. He was resting on a log and he asked how far it was to the shelter. I got the impression that he was a little hard of hearing, so maybe that's why he didn't have much to say.

We probably passed each other. I dropped off a new register at JC - if it was there we were just in front of you - probably passed you.

He seems to be an interesting guy. Looking forward to part 2 and following his journal.

Just met Cimarron, the hiker in question at the Old Orchard shelter in southern Virginia. He's just passed the 500 mile mark and seems to be going strong!11045

Looks pretty fit and spry for 88!

The Pink Panthers (84 and 81) are probably 300 miles behind him now.

If I remember correctly, Cimmaron is a WWII vet, worked with Boy Scouts at Philmont for years. Quite the resume. I followed his journal that he'd gone off trail with some joint pain early on in his hike but got back on trail after some rest and cortozone. I've never met the man but he definately makes me smile.

I stayed at the Jenny Knob shelter with Cimarron a couple of days back. He was able to make his way down a steep and rocky path to get water that day. Did it with no complaints. He didn't need any help with anything. Hope everyone goes out of their way to help him if he needs it, though.

It was a real inspiration to talk with him and see him in action.

I hope I'm hiking the AT when I'm 89.

I wasn't always talkative myself when I was hiking. Sometimes I had other things on my mind besides answering the same old questions or talking about gear which bored me to tears after a while.

I saw Cimarron at Laurel Fork Falls a little while back. He seemed to be going strong conquering the stone steps up from the falls.
