I was wondering what kinda of stakes were most used on the trail, etc... and the different type soil conditions I might find? I'm getting backing into camping, and doing more than just day hikes as I build up to section hike.

I have a hammock set up, and up to now have been using some old plastic stakes, but I feel I need something more durable for longer hikes etc...

you can always cut a few from dead and downed branches if needed....usually they handle wind better than small backpacking pegs.

titanium when i use them but with hammock the tarp is usually tied to branches/roots except when very windy and I pin it to the ground.

For hammock tie outs, I would use aluminum or titanium Y stakes. For my tent I use needle stakes of the same material.

Thanks for the feed back.

I few times I've used my current set up I've found that I mix both root/limb and stake use for the tarp, but feel I really need to be sure I have stakes for higher wind conditions.
