The most important part of my thru planning is all about the last mail drop in Monson. I want to celebrate the end of the journey with a cigar and Scotch. Where is the last place on the trail one can buy a quality cigar and an ounce or two of Scotch to carry til Katahdin ? Would sending a Cuban cigar and Scotch in a mail-drop be a problem ? I would have it sent from Canada.
Thanks for any advices. The only thing I have ever mailed to the US was a certified check.

I wouldn't think that it would be a problem. Put the Scotch in a small camping type plastic bottle and protect the cigar in a "hard" cigar container. I would fill out the required form for international mail and state exactly what is in there, ie: 6 oz of alcohol and a cigar for end of trip celebration.
OR get a shuttle in Monson to the closest town with Scotch and good cigars.

I dont believe that cubans are legal in the US so make sure the country of origin is hidden.

As a fellow Canadian, I would be very leery of trying to smuggle a Cuban cigar into the US and mailing scotch might run you into all kinds of import regulations! AFAIK, cross border transportation of alcohol has to be done in person or under bond and products of Cuba are still banned.

IIWM, I'd settle for the best Cigar you can buy stateside and an 'airline' size bottle of scotch bought at a local (Maine) liquor outlet. Get the cigar in one of the metal tubes and it will survive the trip. You might want to even buy the cigar before you start so you can carry it all the way from Springer, just like some carry a stone!

i once ordered meds from a canadian pharmacy. just after my online docs visit form i filled out. the 11$ for the iosat and the 168$ for the tamiflu were pricy but included the docs visit form i filled out on line.so now i have a script on file with this place and they send me order forms for heroin and crack and meth and ludes and coke and weed. sup with that? it seems you can have deadly drugs delivered from your country. weird. cant do that from here to there. but as far as booze and cuban cigars mailed for that special big k moment? no. the tiny risk to your trip is a bad vibe. laws suck but they suck worse when you get in trouble breaking them. i never been in trouble. i wanna keep it that way. if the way to do that means the worlds 2nd best scotch and cigar after my vacation? good.

You could test the mail by sending one each to me and I will let you know if it worked or not. Just in case, maybe better send two of each.:banana

I have friends who buy cubans from Canada, they ship the wrappers separately, one of them got a letter from the Customs Dept, last time he ordered them, no harm no foul...............

I never planned on how I was getting out of Baxter or how I was getting back home, 'till I got there.

And they can get over it. I don't smoke. Never have. But a cigar in all the open windy air on Big K isn't going hurt any one or any thing except maybe a few tender feelings.

Get a good cigar and little bottle of scotch in NH and mail them to Monson.

As an aficionado the cubans only "rolled" the best cigars... Give me a cigar made right here... THE USA, and a damn good humidor. Cuba is waaay overated.

Hell I can jump on a plane from DC tomorrow and Hike Cuba - Can you? I think not... Unless you have a validated press pass. Hmmm now they have to think.... Woo.

Mailing a cigar in a drop box will assure it's dried out and damned near unsmokable. Find a good one in a tobacco shop somewhere in Maine, keep it in a ziplock to retain humidity, and it just might be worth the effort!

Sorry for the late reply, but just last night I was looking at what can be brought into the US from another country... Tami and I are going on a trip to England later this year and needed to see what we can bring back...

Per the US Customs Department you can bring one bottle of alcholic beverages and up to 100 cigars into the US when you come in with no taxes/etc... Up to $800 on your person... You can also mail up to (IIRC $500) once a week...

So sending a bottle and a cigar will be well under it... As said elsewhere, Cuban goods are still on the banned list... So if you are going to send one, it may get touchy if it is declared as being Cuban...

I'd try to find a nice tobacco shop and buy the stogie there... It'll be fresher and less chance of getting crushed by who ever ships for you (the company not the person)... You can also find a local store to buy a nice bottle of your favorite as well... I'll take Glenlivet or Glenfiddich... :) I plan on sampling many on my week in the UK... Maybe a few ale's while I'm at it...;)

I suspect Shaws is not into single malt scotch. I suspect the nearest location for such a purchase is probably a New Hampshire state store -- you know those socialistic stores in New Hampshire that keep NH a low tax state by peddling stuff that free enterprise markets in Maine won't bother to fight to stock.

Just keep in mind that the summit of Mt Katahdin is NOT the end of your hike. You still have to hike back down.

Same here. If you can get that far, you'll figure it out. Caught a ride out of Baxter from some day hikers about a fourth of the way down after summiting.
