Planning a section hike for 2012 and would like advice on where to go and what time of year to see the rhododendrons and azalea in bloom.
Would like to stay on the southern half of the trail... thinking maybe the
Grayson Highlands area. Please let me know about your favorite sections and what time of year would be best. Thanks as always for info and advice.

How much time do you have?

If rhododendrons are your thing you might consider Damascus to Erwin in June which would be a nice, scenic hike with the climax being the famous rhododendron gardens on Roan Mt. There's also a few good balds, an awesome waterfall and a hostel about halfway to make a resupply and a shower easy to get/do.

If you want Georgia, May is the best time for the azaleas.

I usually take my small group for a section hike with fairly low mileage days. We go 9 days 8 nights on the trail and a days travel each way to and from... Roan Mt sounds like a good place to go. We've been on sections north and south of there. Thanks for the info !
