As this Memorial weekend draws to a close I would like to thank all my fellow veterans for their service to our country. I would be interested to hear your branch and years of service as i'm sure many others would. I was iin the Army from 86-95.

Well I've served from 1999 to the present. After a 10 years of actively long distance hiking, I remember when I first broke the news it shocked a lot of people. It has been my pleasure to serve in the U.S. Army but I look forward to the day when I can return to active long distance hiking.

I was a MP in the Air Force for 6 years, 1981-1987. With that being said...
Memorial Day is NOT for us veterans. It is for the men and women who gave their lives, who died while in service of their country. It's for a day of reflection and to honor them.
Veterans Day is in November. That day is for the men and women like us who have served in the US military.
Thanks to ALL who have served.

Sure would have appreciated being welcomed home from Viet Nam in 1969 like the troops are these days instead of being called a "baby killer" and spat upon when arriving in San Francisco.

I can honestly say that I've been spat on in San Fran AND called a baby killer. In Santa Cruz as well. Sometimes wearing your uniform to go to dinner at Chilli's is just not worth the half off you get ;)

I served in the Marines as a scout/sniper team leader from 2000-2004. Was planning on staying in but took a bullet while fighting in Fallujuh. At least I can hike the AT now :D. Thanks to all those currently serving, the veterans, supporters, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
- Just joined this site after doing a few section hikes on the AT. There a wealth of knowledge on here.

Completed GA section of AT.

Woodbridge? I was on Smallwood Court over in Dale City while in the Pentagon. You a contractor now or what? Sorry to be nosy!
We (programmer buddies) were terrified that we would be bounced out during that time. Everyone had 10-14 years in. After we found out we weren't even considered, we got insulted! C'est la vie!

I flew helicopters for the USAF from 1965 - 71. I flew more than 200 combat missions in Vietnam recovering recon drones.

I never served in the military but my father and father-in-law both served in the Navy in the 50's. I have 21+ years law enforcement
I have organized a relay hike of the AT to raise money for Homes for Our Troops, a charity that builds special needs homes for severely injured veterans. The link is in my by-line, below.

I did the same thing at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne ,Wyoming.

They say 40 below keeps the riff-raff out. We Texans left after 5 years!:D
Left Texas at 32 above zero - Jan '78. Got to Minot 3 days later in 32 BELOW zero! They had 30+ straight days that Dec-Jan of below zero FOR THE HIGH TEMP!!! :eek:
I learned very quickly not to touch metal with bare hands!

My intent for this thread was to honor the dead, thank the living, and to find out more about my fellow hikers. I realize that Memorial day and Veterans day are not the same thing. I have and always will take any opportunity to thank our men and women who have served and are currently serving regardless of what month it is. Thanks again. Aiirborne all the way!

I think everyone on this thread, being veterans, knows both what Memorial Day is about and also what it means to remember our friends and family after they're gone. I'm from Cali, so I'll take all the appreciation I can get, as I get none from strangers back home, but I think its safe to say that anyone on this thread most likely wrote their name and service down, and then took a moment to reflect on the ones they've lost.
There is no harm in thanking a veteran on Memorial day. Hell, I spent most of the day choking back tears at a memorial service for my recently fallen comrades.
