View Full Version : Hiking the IAT in Chequamegnon
I'm looking for any suggestions or help planning a hike in the Chequamegnon Forest in Taylor County. I was looking to be out there for 3 or 4 days. It would either be in late August or mid October depending on my hiking partner's schedule. Just wondered which time frame would be better and if anyone has hiked the Mondeaux- Jerry Lake- Lake Eleven section. Any info would be appreciated. It would be my first IAT hike and we'll be backpacking it. Thanks for any help and have a great summer.
Hello, I've hiked a bit east of there in Taylor and Lincoln Cos. Where are your start/end points? Anything specific you wanna know? I do know someone who I think has done that section.
Also check out the NCT in Wisconsin. If you're on Facebook check it out.

Hi. Thanks for the response. My start point would be at Mondeaux Esker and going to Lake Eleven. It's listed on the trails website as 42 miles. I'd read somewhere that someone had run into some really overgrown areas where they had to machete their way through. Also wondered what the camping situation is up there.
First of all, I assume you have the guide and atlas? Just updated earlier this year. 42 miles by the way is from the beginning of the Lake 11 segment to the end of the Mondeaux segment.
I have not been to that area, but hiked on the Wood Lake segment a few weeks ago which is to the east in the same county.
Anyway, sounds like it's probably pretty remote. I really would recommend you contact Buzz Meyer. He's pretty helpful. Note that there has been some severe weather the last couple years and so you might have some blowdown stuff. And from reading the guide it sounds like these sections can get very wet and hard to follow (mosquitoes).

Thanks for the info. I'm wondering if I should maybe look around for a better section for me?
How experienced/confident are you? I think it's probably pretty nice. I've been working on the Wood Lake segment to the east and that's another with some great scenery that can be backpacked. It would probably be easier.
Not sure precisely when/where this was taken, but could be an indication of the Mondeaux area:
