OK, it's June the twoth today and a few of us want to begin the southern 1/2 of the CT at Durango on July the first or twoth. :D

Is the snowpack SO high in the Rockies this year that we'll likely run into a fair amount in the higher altitude southern half in early July???

I have the Colorado Avalanche Information Center bookmarked but can't find snowpack extent or depth info there.

I would appreciate some commentary on this also as I'm looking at the CT/CDT through CO sometime around the second week of July.

All depends on the melt off...

The CTF facebook page has been giving regular updates of snow FWIW:

This will also help

My gut feeling is that everything is about 2 wks behind.

Early July will have patches of snow here and there in the San Juans and you may encounter some postholing esp on the noth-facing and shaded areas. Mid-July should be snow free.

Finally, this link will help, too:

The conditions for June 1st are there.

Thanks Mags.

Interestingly enough, I sense MUCH the same thing in the Sierras!

For snow depth info you might also try www.postholer.com. There is a page with links to the snow depth monitoring stations along the spine of the CDT.

Thanks Mags. Now I have several sources to peice together a better picture of the snowpack.

And the day before I leave Las Vegas I'll check the week's weather from several sources.

I went to leadville yeaterday to hike and skake down some new gear. The snow was still deep, and local law enforcement said that a snow cat go stuck in the area last week. I decided to drive back home and not posthole for next 3 days.
