OTHER THAN the train station stop in New York, what are the easiest points to access the AT with public transportation only, no shuttles or hitchhiking involved?

1. Harpers Ferry - train from DC via AMTRAK (one per day) or Maryland commuter rail MARC (weekdays only).
2. Bear Mountain, NY - bus from NYC
3. Delaware Water Gap, PA/NJ - bus from NYC or Philadelphia
4. Hanover, NH - bus from Boston
5. Pinkham Notch, NH - bus from Boston
Not an exhaustive list - just what came to my mind now. There are other locales involving fairly short hitches or shuttles (Duncannon, PA; Greenwood Lake, NY; Daleville, VA).
Roanoke VA isnt far from the trail we got a airport and a bus station and lots of hiker freindly people around..
roanoke is near daleville Va but there are a few trail acess in roanoke county.

From NYC there are plenty:
Buses:
Great Barrington, MA & Pittsfield, MA by Peter Pan bus
DWG bus from NYC (a few private companies which shuttle commuters but also have weekend routes)
West Milford/Greenwood Lake NJ by NJ Transit
Train:
Harriman Metro North Train Station from NYC is a enjoyable ~1.5 mi blue blaze from the AT
You already got the AT train station but just south of that is the Pawling train station which is useful if you need it on a weekday.
