ELIZABETHTON — A tourist was stranded Sunday when a thief stole his car from the Laurel Fork Trailhead on U.S. Highway 321.
Steven Rinderknecht, 62, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, told Capt. Rocky Croy of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department that his 2001 Toyota Camry was gone when he returned to the trailhead at the end of his hike at 3 p.m. He said he had been hiking since 10:30 a.m.
He told Croy that he had locked his car and the windows were closed tight. He had the only set of keys to the car. Croy said there was no evidence of broken glass where the car had been.
Rinderknecht said he had been staying at the Days Inn in Johnson City and had been hiking and sight seeing in the area. He said he did not know anyone in the area.
