Think I’ll go for a walk. I’ve been perusing the archives here at WB for a while and I believe it is time to hit the trail for a ‘thru-hike (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=67360)’. With all the advice here, how can I go wrong . . .

I’ve been saving money (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55197) and have accumulated about $1500 (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29971). I think that should be enough (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55386). I’m sure my gear will make it for 2000 miles, so I don’t plan to purchase anything new. If something doesn’t last, I’ll contact the manufacturer and expect a replacement (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38496) within hours. Even if I’ve stuffed 45# into my 30# pack and it finally fails in VT. Additionally, I can discipline myself to not stay in too many towns (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56670), regardless of what everyone else is doing or how bad the weather is. If I do stay (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18659) at a hostel (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=47076), sometimes I might ask for a work-for-stay (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7521) to conserve funds. I’ve heard about hiker boxes (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13277), so I plan to raid (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=58814) those at every opportunity.

It’s looking like a mid-March (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46815) start. Theapproach trail (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=64365). I think I’ll skip it (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=989), since it is a blue-blazer (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2845) and I plan to make it to Neels Gap in 2 days (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68820). I am a little concerned about my 40F bag (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69816), but with my 25F liner (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69770) I should be OK. If I have to, I’ll wear all my clothes to keep warm. After all, GA is in the South and it’s warmer there (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=67964) . . .

As I mentioned, I’ve got about 45# of stuff (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51336) to haul. I don’t think that is too bad. I’ve worn my full pack around the block a few times and it feels ok. I’d like it to be lower but I just haven’t been able to shave any weight (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68946), despite the numerous gear lists (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69495) that have been posted. And, I absolutely won’t part with my frying pan (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=47762), camp chair, 6 pr of socks, 2 pr long pants (incl blue jeans), machete, 3 books, etc (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55798) . . . maybe I can do without the laptop . . . I’ll probably do some slack packing (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16204) when the opportunities arise.

I’m planning about 15 maildrops (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56386) mostly for food (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68100). I think buying food (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30322) in bulk will help me to stay on budget. Hope I don’t get tired of eating Power Bars everyday.

I’m pretty good at staying found, so no maps (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68445) for me, besides there are blazes to follow. The Companion (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68025) (or other Handbook (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41849)) is extra weight also, so if I look over your shoulder (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66074) from time to time, Please don’t get mad at me. Since I am only carrying 1 quart/liter of water (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66291) I may need to know where the next source is occasionally. I’ll carry Aqua Mira for treating water sources (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69658), so I am saving the weight of a filter at least.

I’ve made an itinerary (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=59853) around shelter distances. I understand that shelters (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49747) are full of mice but I’ll probably spend most nights in one, especially when it is raining. Maybe I can save some weight by not carrying my own shelter (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=73337)?!? I’ve read here that mosquitoes sleep at night, so I don’t believe bugs will be a problem. At night I’m not sure what to do with my food bag (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66797) though. Do bears (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=70972) sleep at night?

There is so much to see on the AT (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7527). I’m looking forward to visiting all the States (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2041) and National Parks the trail meanders through, including the Great Smoky Mountains. Hope I can figure out that shelter reservation (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=52039) system though. And The Whites! Wow! The spectacular scenery and views are highly anticipated. On the other hand, the outrageous price (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28466) for a stay in a hut (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20464) is not highly anticipated. I’ll expect all the hut (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56266) croo’s to accommodate me with a work-for-stay promptly upon my arrival.

I hope there is lots of trail magic (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=33369). Every opportunity to enjoy (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71029) a cold soda, etc (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71031) will be welcome. I won’t expect (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=54066) something at every trailhead or road crossing . . . maybe every other one would be sufficient.

What should I do about a trail name (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=63987)? Name myself (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=61252) or wait for something silly to happen and become Feces Foot or something like that?!?

Anyway,

Think I’ll go for a walk . . .

Cast iron. The only way to roll.

Sadly, the creator of Mad Libs died today.

PLEASE DONT DO THIS! I am a server and make $2.13/hr(some states vary, mine sucks) and depend on my tips to make my living. This is a very irresponsible way to go. I plan on starting a thru hike next spring and would never consider this as a way to save money. I am a generous tipper due to me being a server and i most likely wont tip as well as i usually do to save a little money but never will I stiff a server unless I get very bad service. From one hiker to another please be kind to people who wait on you because we do work hard for our customers(most of us at least:D). Plus us hikers dont need the bad rep., you will already smell like crap so you're starting one in the hole.

Maybe you could take a dutch oven, too. There are lots of recipes on-line that are great for use in a dutch oven, but then a couple of recipe books wouldn't be that heavy. A really big, iron dutch oven is best.

All excellent advice. Possibly you could expand it and turn it into a book.

With $1500 You won't have to worry about town too much. You'll have to depend on a lot of mail drops to make it on this budget. You would probably need a $1, or more, per mile in todays economy to make it without a lot of trouble. Anyway, good luck.

So, I’ve been thinking about safety (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?61717-Why-do-they-try-to-scare-us)on the trail (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?68333-How-safe-is-the-trail). It would seem that a gun (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?56314-Carrying-a-handgun-on-the-AT) would be overkill (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?19-Guns-On-The-Trail) and I don’t know State (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?43874-new-gun-laws) or NP (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?44642-Concealed-Weapons-in-Parks) regulations anyway. Maybe some bear spray (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?71565-Well-my-bear-spray-debate-is-over.) or a large (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?71084-I-Need-advice-on-a-knife-to-take-hiking!!), Rambo type (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?61124-What-kind-of-knife-do-you-carry.....) knife (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?44343-what-kind-of-knife) would suffice (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?59127-Knife-necessity-and-use). Of course, to be of any use for protection (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?257-What-do-you-Carry-for-Protection-on-the-Trail), it would need to be available (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?53359-Carrying-a-dagger-while-hiking) at all times and not tucked away in the bottom of my pack. I also suppose it would be beneficial if I knew how to use it. Then again maybe I’m just over (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?70492-Trail-Safety) thinking (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?22426-Safety) this . . .

Too funny, but are you planning to stay in shelters? With a really good cast iron frying pan (or Dutch Oven) you will surely be welcome by all the other through hikers. Oh, and don't forget a trail chair (or stool) and backpack saw so if you are trying to cut some fire wood your machete can't handle, you can still cut some green wood for the fire.

"$1500 should definitely be enough. I can always stay at hostels that rely on donations or the honor system. I mean surely they don't expect me to contribute?? And when other hikers see that I am a little short on food, I am sure that they will share. I mean most hikers carry too much food anyway. And at night when everyone goes into town for a beer, I'll go too and just leave a little early when the tab comes due. Hey! I'm a lot of fun! Surely my buds will simply be glad for my company, right?? :p"

Does gubmint cheese last longer? I figure it requires forms filled out in triplicate before it's allowed to spoil.

I read somewhere that a New portable Micro Wave Oven is now available for Thru Hikers, you simply plug it into a Current Bush. The only thing I would recommend is to hike in Star Wars Sleepers complete with feet, that way you won’t need a sleeping bag or the need to change before you turn in and you’ll be ready to hike your 40 miles a days as soon as you get up..... :banana

Does it have to be Star Wars or will any footed jammies work? I have some with dinosaurs.

I’ve made an itinerary (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=59853) around shelter distances. I understand that shelters (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49747) are full of mice but I’ll probably spend most nights in one,

Bring a compass with a mirror on the back...so you can look at it and see who is lost!

Watch this movie and learn how to put those shelter mice to good use as a food source: :p

Enjoy your hike! :D :banana:banana

Bloody hell. How did I miss THAT post from 2011/2012 before my first attempt ?!? Surely, by taking all that advice I would have made it instead of spraining/cracking my ankle. (I know, I know, don't call you "Shirley".)

Now I get to sift through all the posts and try to relate them to my 2016 attempt. I'm still not taking a frying pan. That Rambo knife, now.................

Be sure to bring a pressure cooker for cooking at altitude.
And bring a boom box so you can share your music with everyone else.
And bring your tuba.

FANTASTIC! Oh, if you dont bring the laptop.. can i have it.. to use as a seat!! so level, it will be great!! If not, just "place it along side the approach trail" as many do, dont worry.. the "APPROACH TRAIL ROBOT" who comes 3x a day will be sure to pick it up! Along with any other disregarded piece of equipment you wont need! hahah ;)

Anyway,

Think I’ll go for a walk . . .

Tim

I read this when I first joined WB and tried to understand if it was a guide or a joke. Now after many miles on the trail and hours on WB I definitely see the humor in it. At the same time the links make it an informative guide too. Anything in it that I didn't think was a joke I could click thru and form my own opinion based on the WB discussion.
Thanks

No harm in resurrecting a great thread. Maybe more people will resurrect and read some of the older posts that actually address their questions they have instead of having 623 threads about the same topic in a month/year.
