Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Looks like I'd better wait till later in march to start heading north.

Groundhog's forecast: Early spring in Ga.

By MARK DAVIS

The groundhog's forecast for the South is early spring, although Georgia's groundhog disagrees with his more famous Pennsylvania counterpart.

At 7:35 this morning, Gen. Beauregard Lee, chief forecaster at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Gwinnett County, emerged from his den and did not see his shadow.

Legend says that means we will see an early spring.

In the central Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney, Phil, the groundhog in residence, emerged 4 minutes before Gen. Lee and saw his shadow, suggesting six more weeks of winter.

About 75 people stood in 39-degree temperatures to watch the annual rite in Gwinnett County.

This could be the last year of weather work for the venerable general. His handlers say Gen. Lee, the furry forecaster in residence for 15 years, is headed for retirement.

"Beau's gettting kind of old," said Art Rilling, the Game Ranch CEO.

When Beau appeared this morning, he was accompanied by a 2-year-old female groundhog.

Game Ranch officials hope the two will mate and provide Georgians with a new Beau by next year.

Beau is said by Game Ranch officials to be the bachelor nephew of the original weather woodchuck. The first Beau retired after 10 years.

If this, indeed, is the general's last stand, he will retire with an average any meterologist would envy.

Between the two Beaus, they have been incorrect only once in 24 years of predictions, Rilling said.

The southern woodchuck event is relatively young, compared to the one in Punxsutawney, which began in 1886 with newspaper reports of the groundhog's venture.

According to the Punxsutawney Club, Phil saw his shadow this year for the 95th time. He hasn't seen his shadow 14 times; nine years have no record of the outcome.

The tradition, which has its origins in European folklore, later became known as the Christian holiday of Candlemas.

There is another Groundhog celebration in Georgia:
