I'm looking for a place to crash for the night of July 23 and some kind of transportation from St. Albans to Journey's End the next morning. I found a cheap train from VA to St. Albans, but it gets me there at 9:30 PM and it's still about an hour away from Journey's end.

If there are any folks in St. Albans willing to help me out, that would beat the hell out of going to Burlington first and taking a "by the mile" type of shuttle.

How is hitching up that way? Looks like the best/most direct route to Journey's End Rd is Rt 105. How's hitching on Rt 105?

Anything I haven't considered/other options would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

PS

Motel rates look unbelievable...$130+ for a two bed room for one night. So any help is GREATLY appreciated. :) !

You will have more options through Burlington in terms of accomodation, plus puts you getting into town a little earlier. New England doesn't do the $50 motel room as you have found out! You can probably get a great hotel room in Burlington for about $60 on Travelocity under Top Secret Deals, last year we did a 3 month road trip in the US and did this all the time, saved up heaps!

If money is an issue, I would try to get someone to shuttle you to Journeys End the same night you arrive, you can hike up to Journeys End camp and crash for free, then in the morning you are at the northern terminus.

I would expect to pay around $80-100 to get to Journeys End from Burlington (150 miles return). Obviously you can hitch, and hitching in Vermont is easy, but you will lose a day in all likelyhood. If $100 is more important than a day, hitch, if not, get a shuttle.

Most shuttles I've heard of run out of Burlington (although it looks like you will drive through St. Albans on the way), search Whiteblaze there are services listed. Also contact the GMC and check out longtrailhiking.info

Doesn't your train stop in Burlington, just before St. Albans?

Train doesn't stop in Burlington at all. It stops in Essex Jct....7 miles NE of Burlington.

There are hotels around it by the Outlets, in Williston and South Burlington, but not sure it's in easy walking distance.

Thanks for the update, I thought it stopped in Burlington as well, maybe Greyhound goes to Burlington?

Yes it does. Not sure where the station is now. It was on Pine street less than a mile south of downtown, but there was talk of moving it to battery street or somewhere else. No idea if it moved yet, but it should still be close to downtown and the hostel.

Thank you for clearing this up. I am also in the process of figuring out how to get to Journey's End, in about 10 days.

It looks like there is a hotel in Essex Junction, for about $70.

Greyhound does go to Burlington, a few times a day, from Boston (and Montreal), via Manchester, NH, and White River Junction, VT. According to its website, it no longer has a stop in St. Albans.

I have collected a bit of information about public transportation in VT. Perhaps it will be of some use...

The closest town to North Troy with interstate public transportation is St. Albans (47 mi North Tr, about 40mi from LT & VT 105; this is 2.6 mi on LT from the northern terminus). Amtrak runs once a day from NYC to St. Albans via White River Junction, Montpelier, Waterbury, and Essex Junction, as well to Rutland, via Albany (almost). Greyhound stops in White River Junction, Montpelier, and Burlington, on its way from Boston to Montreal (except for 1 bus a day from NYC to WRJ).

Local VT buses run along US 7 from St. Albans to Williamstown, MA (from which there is a Peter Pan bus to NYC) and along I-89 from Burlington to WRJ.

The schedules for buses from Burlington to St. Albans, Waterbury/Montpelier, and Middlebury are here: http://www.cctaride.org/pdf/Current%20Web%20Schedules/june2011.pdf (near the bottom; see Link Express; M-F only).

From Middlebury to Rutland and to Manchester are: http://www.thebus.com/ (http://www.thebus.com/)

From Bennington to Manchester and Williamstown: http://www.greenmtncn.org/ (http://www.greenmtncn.org/)

Waterbury to Morrisville (36 miles from North Troy): http://www.gmtaride.org/PDF/Web%20Schedules/Route100Commuter.pdf (http://www.gmtaride.org/PDF/Web%20Schedules/Route100Commuter.pdf)

Montpiler to St. Jonesbury (43 miles from North Troy): https://sites.google.com/a/rctvt.org/riderct/rct-files/us-2-c1 (https://sites.google.com/a/rctvt.org/riderct/rct-files/us-2-c1)

Once a month, there is a bus from Littleton, NH (from which Concord Trailways runs twice daily to Boston) to Island Pond (37 miles from North Troy): https://sites.google.com/a/rctvt.org/riderct/bus-information/kingdom-shopper (https://sites.google.com/a/rctvt.org/riderct/bus-information/kingdom-shopper)

Burlington is 73 miles from North Troy. There is a Hertz at the airport and on Route 7, both about 3 miles from downtown. From the latter, there is a rather regular bus downtown: http://www.cctaride.org/pdf/Current%20Web%20Schedules/june2011.pdf (http://www.cctaride.org/pdf/Current%20Web%20Schedules/june2011.pdf)
(see Sherbourne Rd, somewhere half-way down; Hertz is near IDX Drive).
