Turnabout is fair play.

Being polite. Acting humble. Using deodorant. Asking permission. Saying "please" and "thank you". Smiling. Not acting like a begger.

It also makes a difference what the town's experience has been like with hikers in the past, and the general make up of the town.

Loved the sign at Mings in Waynesboro "Attn Hikers! The YMCA has free showers"

Be considerate of the town folks by showering before you enter their establishments. Don't expect everyone to do everything for you for free. Mind your manners. Watch your language. Cover up. Say please and thank you.

Dude gets leftovers at restaurants after closing time, posts his itinerary so sympathetic folks can send him pkgs., etc. He calls all of it trail magic.

Looks odd at first glance--but you never know about people's situation so it's best not to judge.

:rolleyes:Scotty, what compels you to judge this hiker odd? Dude ain't odd, he just has a winning physical attribute described in Sierra Echo’s (hilarious) entry.

Don't expect everyone to do everything for you for free.

Include tipping money in hiking budget. Reward good service: shuttlers, hotel maids, food servers.

I'm guessing that, in the south at least, "sir" and "ma'am" would go a long way.

My walking buddy from NYC ,used to say to the Diner waitress -We might smell a bit of the woods so we don't mind sitting near the door or the open window. Showed a bit of respect for their business.

My thought exactly.

Being respectful and helpful and friendly and polite and clean-ish helps, too.
