Attention

I am looking at trying to incorporate a new software upgrade this coming Monday (20 June) if all goes well. Update: now it looks like the update will be Tuesday (21 June).

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case they try to log onto the web site and have some issues at the beginning of next week.

This upgrade has been overdue for over a year now. We cannot put it off any longer.

Thank you and please be patient.

I for one appreciate your efforts. Hopefully all goes well with the upgrade. I have a background in networking and server installation/maintenance. In my experience the best you can hope for is that everything goes well and the users assume that you really don't do much. If something goes wrong, users will likely assume that you don't know what you are doing. A success means that users don't really notice what you do. Not a job for those that need accolades from the masses.

I echo the encouragement, and if need be, I can take a few Zero's away from the site in the interest of having a better WB.

Whiteblaze is overdue for an upgrade from the circa 1998 useability level. I'd love to see an up-to-date with web standards version of Whiteblaze. Just sayin'. :)

Thank you, ATTroll. Looks good so far? Does this change our functionality in any way? Is it possible to delete or to edit posts unless you pay? Easier to upload photos?

All the links in [COLOR=black]ReSupply Info are messed up. They are like this

when they should be like this

I like the looks of the revamped site. A few questions which I have not been able to figure out yet.

1. Logging in - it looks like I can only log in through Facebook; every time I tried to click on the UserID box, it took me to a FB login. The only way I got on now was to hit "login" and receive an error message in which case I could then log in with my WB ID.

2. Once I got to my photo gallery, I saw the sort options just like before but they didn't work. Trying to sort photos either by rating, views, etc. all resulted in an error page.

3. I couldn't find an equivalent to "Today's Posts" which was always my first stop under the old WB. I thought "What's New" was yielding the same but apparently it excludes threads on which I've already commented, I guess because they're not "new" to me. It appears that "What's New" consists of Unread posts only.

Not complain' - just wanted to let you know.

Edit - Strike No. 3 - I just figured out how to access "Today's Posts."

1. I don't know why you can not login. I have been able to login and out without a problem. I will look into it a little.

2. I see what you mean about the sort option in the gallery. I have tried to sort and I get an error page. I am troubleshooting this now.

Thank you

I found another minor hiccup with Avatars - there is no option for custom avatars. I'm not sure if this is due to policy or if something hasn't been touched via the .conf file.

Just trying to add to your work load Troll :P ((Just kidding, I <3 VB but updating/upgrading it can be hinky, bless you my child)).

Users can not have custom avatars unless they are donating members. We did this for several reasons.
1. To keep out the unwanted or rude avatars
2. To help bring on donations to help keep the web site online.

When I bring up the WB home page, the "Log in with Facebook" indicator overlays the "User ID" - no matter how I try to get around it, I'm always prompted with my FB log-in. I got in now by going to this thread, hitting "reply," and responding to the message that I must first log in to reply. It's an end run but for me, the only way unless I want to log in on FB. Maybe I will sometimes but suppose I wasn't a FB user?

I am not sure why it is doing that.

The login is on the left side, totally in a different location.

It looks like there is some sort of glitch with images. I just posted a trip report with several images. When I previewed the post, all the images were there. Once I hit submit, all the images showed up with icons saying the images were not available from photobucket. However, the images are clearly visible on a couple of other backpacking sites. It looks like there is a bug in the software.

Google Chrome is letting me reply..but renders incorrectly for what I think are emoticons on the side? The emoticon links are shown as broke images.

I've been experiencing something new since the update...probably something minor that needs tweaking!

Using IE 9 when I use either my browser back button or go to advance to another page on a multiple page thread I get a 'warning' message from IE that reads

"Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?

Changes made in the editor will be lost."

And of course this requires clicking ok on the warning before I can proceed.

ATTroll - Minor request

When one selects "New Posts" it is now harder to see what posts the user has already posted in. There is just a subtle gray square in the folder icon. Is there a way to make this more pronounced?

For those of you that are having the "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?". I have been told that it is for the following reason.

Firefox does this if you either do not wait for the page to load completely, or you started to type a reply and changed my mind. Those are both normal.

So far, the only way I've found to post an image from a third site like flickr or photobucket is to copy and paste the image code into the "Quick Reply" box. Any other entry will get the error message. When someone quotes an image that has posted, the error message appears, apparently because it was not posted through the "Quick Reply" box. The standard reply box, reply with quote box, or initial post box blocks the image.

To add another layer to the mystery, if you go back to the URL I posted in #27, you can click on it and it will display the image from Photobucket in another window. But if you click on the the URL in your quote in #63, the new window only displays the error message. It seems like there is some connection issue or filter issue through standard posting format, but not quick reply.

Rick,
Although the new look is different, I think most hikers will either get used to it, or go somewhere else. My question pertains to clicking on "new posts" under my avatar. This feature, which has been carried over from the old software, is a great feature. However, with the new software, there is now no message to let me know that I have reachedthe end of new posts since my last visit. I beleive that the wording was somethin to the effect that the following posts have not been updated since your last visit but may contain unread posts. Is it possible to incorporate this feature back into the current site? just wondering. Thanks for all your hard work with this site.

Both of the search problems should be resolved shortly. I started a search re-index last night on WhiteBlaze. The index is still running and should be done within the next couple hours. I did a seach for these two names just a minute ago and it has already provide more results.

If anyone is wondering why the web site is running so slowly it is because the web site is still doing a search re-index. It should be done withing the next couple of hours and then things should pick back up again.

I'm gradually finding most that I use. I do miss "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts." Is it really no longer available?

I miss this feature as well. I have tried commenting about it on another thread, but to no avail. I hope they can revive this feature; it was extremely helpful.

I have given the link to ATTroll and hopefully he can implement it.

I'm having the same problem Attroll. The Face Book, Notification, Profile & my login name overlay each other. The Log In is clear on my PC but those 4 overlay each other and cannot be used as is.
I believe it was the logo that was causing this issue. I have shortened the logo. I hope this helps the people with older computers.

Coming along very nicely. I bet within a week or so people will wonder what all the fuss was about.

That's why you don't give in to the "please go back to the way it was" folks even though it is tempting. Upgrades are necessary a evil. In a perfect world an upgrade like this would be done on a test server and the kinks worked out before performing it on the live system but that's not always easy to do.

When I open WhiteBlaze I check all the threads, but only open the 3 percent that interest me. When I return I don't like to have to review the thread titles that I've already looked at and decided not to open.

I only open threads on subjects I'm interested in, or which I think I might be able to offer some useful information. Since I last walked most of the trail 18 years ago, I rarely have anything up to date on queries about specific sections. I also rarely buy cutting edge gear any more, so I have have nothing useful to say about such matters.

Anyway, that's why the message in question is useful, not a big deal, but useful.

Another way to avoid this would be to mark All Messages Read before you log off. Then when you log back on, the only thing showing new would be only New Posts since you last logged off.

Well, I don't read all of them, or even very many of the many WhiteBlaze messages. Quite often, however, I will choose to eventually review some unread messages if I sense I've overlooked something of interest, Or just out of curiosity over a thread with multiple replies, even though the initial title didn't spur any interest by me.

It's just a tiny thing. But it helps me get the most of the site at my own pace.

Possibly.

Another option would be to trim the top right menu. Once logged on where it says Welcome Sly, clicking Sly is the same as my profile a couple over. You could put that in a drop down with settings in the gray menu bar under the main menu bar, which looks real nice since you did it over.

As you keep adding more buttons more of my links in the grey bar below the main green tab bar are covered up. If it matters, New posts, Private, Calendar (which is a joke anyway) and half of Community are now covered by buttons for 2,000 miler, Odds and Ends, and Donations.
The new Unanswered Posts tab is hidden under my search bar on the top green bar far right, as has ever tab that has been there since the update.

Hey attroll,

On the 'Class of 20XX (http://www.whiteblaze.net/index.php?page=2011thruhikers)' Spreadsheets, when clicking the 'User Name' links within the spreadsheet, the following message is received:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /forum/ on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Is there anyway to fix this? The links should take you to the corresponding 'user name' hidden bookmark in the main body of the spreadsheet. The 'My Trailjournal' links seem to work fine.

Thanks.

I don't see how this would cause the problem but you may want to check your VIEW settings in your browser. Try clicking on view in the top of you browser. You text size should be Medium.
That is the only thing I can think of right now that could cause this. Maybe a virus protection program running in the background could do this.

I have the same issue, if I type half a sentense then pause to think my curser ends up moving to another part of the text. I think it is because I am draging my thumb over the mousepad and inadvertantly moving the curser. I use a laptop most of the time and the mousepad is just below the keyboard.

I use a desktop -- now 4-5 years old. It never happened before the upgrade. The cursor remains where I pause to think. But the visible text jumps back several lines. Again and again. Eventually, I say to hell with it and either stop there, or cancel the whole reply. It is especially irritating when I reply with quote. Because then the jump back begins even earlier.

If I just move down the story it doesn't stay stable for more than a second, but jumps back up. Moving the cursor character by character to where the jumping started allows me to at least finish a sentence. I wish I could think of something else to say so that it would happen on this post and I could tell you just where the jumping began. Okay, I made it. The jump happened after the words "jumping began." The cursor remains where it was. But the last typed text is not longer visible.

What is the status of the random photo stream that used to be on the homepage? That was certainly a favorite (of mine anyway).

Also wondering about ratings, comments and views of photos. Can those be added to the photo thumbnails? That way it is not necessary to open the photo to see if it has been rated, commented on or viewed.

Thanks!

After the software upgrade I was able to keep the old front page of the web site up and running. But I was not able to get the rotating images back on the old front page. We will eventually be going to the new front page. I have been working on this new front page for quite some time now and it is still nowhere near ready. It is still a long ways down the road before this new front page will be ready.

If you would like a glimpse of what the new front page (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/content.php?) will look like you can view it here but keep in mind that it is no where near done. I will be a while before I can get it done.
