Has the official AT mileage been detemined yet. I keep heaing 2181?

2181.0 is the number used in the 2011 Thru-Hiker's Companion. If you want to be
pedantic and roll a wheel the entire route, you'd likely pick up another two because of
the elevation changes.
I guess I'm a whimp. The trail was shorter back when I hiked it. It was uphill both ways though.

As a hiker of short sections I may never finish the trail if they keep making it longer each year :D

Back in the late sixties, it was 2011 miles. That's a big difference.

actually that idea appeals to me.always something over the next hill, whats better than that?

It's only 1146 miles as the crow flies, so those switchbacks must add a lot.
