My daughter and I are hiking in a few weeks SB from Stecoah Gap to Telico Gap. Planning to camp at the Bald one night and on the river at the NOC the other night. Can anyone suggest a nice spot to hammock on the river in the NOC area. Thanks.

Humm, I don't think so. Not on NOC property. Maybe going up or down river a bit, but from what I remember of the area, that would be difficult to do. Better to just stay in one of the bunk houses or go the half mile south to the shelter.

Thanks. I didn't intend to camp on the property, just somewhere close. The shelter may be the best option.

Some guys I ran into over Memorial Day said they were going to hang on the other side of the RR tracks down a little ways from the NOC. I never saw where they were talking about when I got there but I didn't look too hard.

Google earth gives a pretty clear picture of the area. There's a road on one side of the river and RR tracks on the other. Both are very close to the river there.

Looks like if you head west along the RR tracks for a bit (not too far, few 100 yrds) there is a spot with a stand of trees between the tracks and the river which might work out okay.

There is a place down stream where you can camp along the river. but I dont know if there are trees for hammocking. Follow the tracks for about 50 yards and there is a dirt/gravel roadway that follows along the river. There are a set of wood steps about 50 yards down that road that goes over to the camping area. You can check it out. if you dont see a place to hang the hammock, you can hike the 1 mile to the Rufus Morgan shelter.

Just hang under the deck.

I was staying at a cabin at Lake Cumberland with the family and I hung my hammock under the deck. It was raining and made for a great nap spot.
