Are you talking one night, a weekend, a week, a month, or a thruhike?

What time of year are you hiking and where are you hiking?

Here's a tried and true gear list (http://www.backpacker.com/november_08_pack_man_/articles/12659?page=4). Add a trash compactor bag for liner and you're good to go. Tweak for summer to go even lighter.

that's about 15-20 pounds more than you need to carry and $1000 more than you need to spend

ParkourTraceur,

If it is a good list or bad list is not up to anyone except you. You are the one who is carrying it. If you are missing something you wish you had, then you are the one who suffers. If your are carrying extra equipment, again you are the one who has to carry it. Anyone who is post one way or the other, is not effected at all.

I know this sound really simple but this was one of the biggest mistakes I made early on during my first thru-hike. I worried so much about what everyone else told me I needed or didn't need that I end up carrying a lot of extra equipment that I didn't need. After I got past that I did pretty good for myself. I started carrying a very lite and easy to carry pack that I've been happy with for years.

Just my two cent. My advise is carry what you want and leave the rest out.
