Board Seeks Recommendations for New Stewardship Council

The Board of Managers is seeking recommendations for candidates for the Stewardship Council that will be organized as part of the new ATC governing structure. The council will oversee policy development and will have broad oversight responsibilities for ATC's conservation programs.
The council, with regional representation, will oversee policy development and programs related to stewardship of the Trail and surrounding lands. It will have broad oversight responsibilities for ATC's conservation programs and will advise the new Board of Directors in the following areas:

Trail and facility design, construction and maintenance;
Land and cultural- and natural-resource management;
Field programs (crews and ridgerunners);
Volunteer development and training;
Community outreach and partnership development;
Threat identification and mitigation; and
Land protection, including ATC Land Trust activities.
In addition, the council is expected to be the primary national pathway for communication between Trail-maintaining volunteers and those who oversee conservation policies and programs.

The council's membership will include a wide representation of Trail-management partners. Each of the four regional partnership committees formed last fall has or will nominate candidates from their ranks. The Board also is inviting candidates from the entire Trail community, including clubs, ATC members, and community and partner organizations.

Hoping to compile a broad base of skills on the council, the Board seeks candidates with an array of backgrounds and experience. Prior experience working on the Trail itself or within ATC or Trail-maintaining clubs is valuable, the Board said, but it is seeking candidates from outside the traditional A.T. management community who also have skills and experiences that can benefit the council and who are willing to make a commitment to the Appalachian Trail. Experience working with local, state, and federal agencies and partners is also valuable, it said.

Do you know someone who would make a good candidate for the Stewardship Council? Recommend them now: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/about/council_form.html

Recommendations must be received no later than March 15, 2005. The Board of Managers will act on the recommendations of the selection committee at its May 2005 meeting.
