Sectioning near Hot Springs when I came across 2 guys. One was really laboring under the afternoon heat, humdity and obviously heavy pack. As we talked he expained that he had a 5 pound tent along with a hammer because he knew the ground would be hard. I mean, this was a real hammer. No ultrlight stuff here. As he began to put the pack on, I got a quick view inside. Is that beer, I asked. Sure was...a 12 pack. By, the way, his hiking 'buddy' didn't have a pack. Gotta love it!

If every Hiker on here that ever carried a 12 pack left Whiteblaze it would reduce a lot of membership.
The first time I met one of the "hall of fame nominees" he was carrying a 12 pack of bottles to a shelter in Shenandoah, to share of course.
:p
I hope the hikers you met had a great time and learned from the trip.

I did that with oranges when I was 19, a bag full of them. Can't imagine what the beer and the hammer weighs together???

Hope the beer was at least decent...maybe Pilsner Urquell or Modelo Especial.

That's nothing. I met some guys once who were carrying full-sized folding beach chairs, the ones with the cup holders. They had a cooler, too, and god knows what else. They'd walk 500 feet, stop and sit for a while, then go another 500 feet. I think they only made it 3 miles.

I met a hiker in the Grand Canyon that had an iron skillet tied to the outside of his pack.

Before I knew anything, I went on a week long hike from springer with 2 changes of clothes, including jeans, and washed my hair in a cold stream every day. That was 15 years ago... thank the gods for the interwebs and learning from mistakes!

I'm still waiting on a genius to make dehydrated beer...until then I might sneak a couple of cans in my pack...but not a 12 pack!

I wouldn't feel sorry for him. If he put it in his pack well then it would make sense that he knew he would have to carry it. As for his friend, well at the end of the day what he did not carry he does feel that he needs. There are some of us that don't need very much equipment or no pack at all.

Hike you own hike let others hike theirs.
