Has anyone hiked the Northville Placid Trail (NY) in the last few weeks? How are the conditions? I know that the trail can be muddy and bogging at times. Has the trail be hit hard by a lot of rain recently?

I haven't hiked recently (Aug/Sept 2010) but this trail is muddy and very boggy at the best of times. In periods of high rain you should expect a substantial increase in this. What this means in practice is 'fords' in some areas, potentially waist deep at Mud Creek which is about 20 miles north of Piseco, and wet and muddy feet every day.

It's common for bridges to get washed out annually, and a number of bridges were out when I hiked. There are some bridges that are absolutely critical so do call the ADK about this, as they would require a swim as opposed to a ford if the bridge is out.

As was stated, the NPT is always wet. beavers make it a real treat. The recent rains have washed out bridges like the one at W. Canada Creek. I was in the W. canadas this weekend and the the french louie trail which intersects the NPT was flowing. yes the trail itself was a river in places. expect to get wet. When do you plan on doing the NPT? Send me a PM, I will be doing it again in July.

If you have thoughts of doing the Northville Placid Trail, looks like now would be a great time. We just finished the trail and the conditions were probably the best they could be. Not nearly as muddy as we had expected. 90% of the mud bogs were basically dry and had the consistency of play doh.

If you don’t mind some rugged trail conditions and are looking for a trail where you can gel at lakes or ponds or creeks, then this trail is for you.

Have NatGeo maps742 and 744 that we used for this hike available for sale. If interested, please email me. Maps are still in brand new condition.

The NPT area experienced some significant rain and winds from Irene. Initial reports from DEC are trickling in at present. Air recon has reported the dam at Duck Hole was breached and Duck Hole has dewatered. The fate of the trail and leantos downstream are unknown at present. It will take time before personnel are able to assess the damage and report.
