I starting to hike south from Katahadin in July. I was curious to opinions on whether a liner with long underwear/hat/gloves/puff jacket would be warm enough or 40 sleeping bag ? I know that I'd want a bag in the Whites but not sure about whether I would need it in Maine. Avgs say 50 for low so just curious as what others who know the area think. I'll be in a hammock with a ridge rest.

Any other ME tips would be great.

thanks

Your liner plus layers strategy should be fine until you reach Virginia. From somewhere around Waynesboro, you will need a 20 degree or lower sleeping bag.

I suspect that you are right about carrying a bag in the Whites. In my experience, the Whites were warmer than Maine, but that was just specific to 2009.

take the 40 and the hat. The liner, long underwear, hat, gloves, and jacket can be added on once temperatures start dropping in the autumn.
