Me and my buddy who will be out of the army in april/june of 2013 are going SOBO and are planning on stocking up for an early june 2013 trip are MRE's a good idea?

No, I find them abit heavy and costly. Your better off with freeze dried . Also MRE have that off the wall one use heating element that is just going to create bulk. I think if you go thru any grocery store you'll find alot of better off the shief options also. Did a good amount of the trail back in 76 when my ets came up. Carried c rations for awhile out of habit. Big mistake. Thanks for your service.

Do bring one of those spoons out of an MRE though. They are awesome.

You could field strip them, bring the entree and that fruit bar thing, along with a spoon.

There are useful items in MRE's, like said above break them down and take out what you want. I like the little bottles of Tabasco, the gum, matches, etc. I wouldn't carry all that packaging. The entrees can be a welcome change from regular hiker's freeze dried/dehydrated meals, but they are heavy/bulky since they aren't dried.
