Okay, here's what it is.......

- the modified hammock (see www.hikinghq.net (http://www.hikinghq.net/))

- cord

-homemade pocket tarp

-tent steaks

-zip-lock (or other brand) 1qt bag

To make the tarp:

get two large black trashbags and open them, then cut the sides so they open all the way. put them side bu side with a slight over lap in the middle. Tape the two together and your finished!

the only thing I can't figure out is how to attach the lines for the steaks to the tarp. I thought of using pebbles and tieing the rope around it or for a lighter approach small balls of tin foil. the other thing was just to go buy grommets. Any ideas are appriciated.

how about tape tie outs? a loop of tape on the corners... umm... fat piece of tape. cut a little bit in about an inch in from both ends on both sides (so you have four cuts) fold the tape so the middle has the sticky side in and then fold it over and tape it to the plastic.

Good idea. Oh, I looked at the lenth of the tarp and relized it needs to be one trash bag bigger.

let me know if the duct tape is strong enough.. Thinking about it, it might have issues staying on the plastic during strong winds.

oh... and how much does it wiegh? How tall are you and how long is your hammock?

I think the hammock it's self is six ounces, I cut the net to my hight. the whole kit fits into a one qt. bag w/ room to spare. I haven't got to the tape part yet(ran out while making the original tarp)

I also made steaks out of a wire hanger so it would be lighter.

I need to get me some light wieght hammocking fabric. are the knots right at your head/feet? (I mean the part where the hammock turns into rope)

I used a cheap net hammock from walmart and chopped it up (look at the modified hammock on hiking hq) As for fabric, I chopped up a bedsheet and hemmed it with fabric bond (I can't sew to well :D ). I think that ripstop would be the lightest but bedsheets come right out of your closet if you have an old beat up one that looks really rag-tag or one you don't care about.

well, the knots shouldn't be right at your head and feet, you want a little room to move around.

right. I think I have way too much room, I could almost fit me and the rest of my family in mine. How much room do you leave at each end? (like 6 inches? a foot extra? so a five footer would want a six foot hammock? )

no I haven't worked with ripstop nylon as yet, though I plan to. I'll let you know how it goes. When it is finally save to go to the market again, stupid carnivaleros and their water (or ice/paint/pee/beer) balloons. So, I'll have to wait till the weekend after next to go shopping safely.
