Have you tried Gpsfiledepot (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/)? They have free topo maps for every state.

Garmin used to sell a National Parks East 24k topo that included the AT. It's probably still out there. WARNING: Don't waste your money even if its free! I found the trail data on the AT to be over 35 years old in some places (You read correctly). Case in point: NPE has the AT going straight through the Mt Rogers area over what is now the Iron Mountain Trail. The AT was relocated to a horseshoe loop over the Grayson Highlands in 1972.

I see they are selling a new Trailhead Series - AT for $50. It includes the entire AT with 10 miles on each side.

I know you said free, but just in case... I haven't tried this map, so don't know if it is any better. But it can't be worse.

I like many of the files at gpsfiledepot, but none of the ones I have tried have a useful version of the AT. if you don't really need the trail, just decent topo, then use the aggregate of Northeast TOPO US maps parts 1,2,3 and South East (you merge them into one large image file, so you need a good sized SD card to hold it.)

If you want to pursue it, AWOL (author of the AT Guide http://www.theatguide.com/ ) had a guy on the trail in 2010 with a GPS in hand. He mapped the trail, shelters and all. If AWOL is selling the Guide for kindle at $7.99, maybe he would part with a garmin compatible trail overlay for less? I would buy that!

I have the 2010 trail overlay with shelters/town info/shuttles/post offices/hostel info/hotel info/etc, made it myself from various online info. You're welcome to that. Although I don't have a dedicated AT topo map as yet, I need to work on that.. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send it to you.

You can get AT centerline data in kml format from the ATC for free.

It isn't difficult to convert into GPX data for your Garmin. It's gonna be big though. You can get fine TOPOs for GA and probably other states for free.
