View Full Version : riff raff
does the AT have more riff raff than a decade ago or do forums and blogs just make it seem that way? I was a RdgeRunner in 96 and I think I had 2 incidents in 4 months, neither were that big of deal and nothing like I read about going on now. "better" info or more scum?

I think a lot of it is just jitters from people who dont have a lot of experience on the trail. Weve had a lot of posts lately about bears, lightning, the usual stuff. Instantaneous news reports , and a multitude of delivery systems, bring news to a lot more people than ever before.Just as the news on TV accentuates on "bad stuff" which is a very, very small percentage of the real world, which is by and far a freindly, caring place, so is the AT.
I think there's more riffraff on WB.
The overwhelming majority have better things to do with their time hence the skewed representation.
Riff Raff dominates Trail Days.
Like dirty dishes in a sink, riffraff attracts more of the same.

I only started to hike the AT eight years ago, so yes, the AT now has more riff raff on it that 10 years ago. :)
My experience is that most of the riff raff has left the trail before they get to Vermont.....hiking long distances isn't easy !!!!

Not sure if its rif raf or just inexpereced hikers. I sections hike in the South and see more problems in the first 200 miles then after that.
