When you encounter a water crossing, do you forge ahead and let your hiking shoes/boots and socks get wet, or do you stop and change into water shoes?

Also, do you prefer gore-tex water-proof hiking shoes, and among the water shoes, what's recommended? Thanks.

Gortex boots suck in my experience. Your feet are going to get wet no matter what you wear. Changing socks is the most important thing in keeping the feet happy. Wash out the salt/debris in the dirty socks hang on pack...
