Question: I started my thru on March 1, 2011. I arrived in Harpers Ferry on May 25th. I had to take time off to raise more funding to finish and get to Maine. I will get back on July 11th. Is this still considered a thru if I have taken a whole month off?

Thanks

I belive the requirement is to complete it in one calander year, ie, 365 days start to finish.

Of course. The popular notion is that within a year is a thru. A month is nothing. I took 42 zeros. If you start at Springer in March and summit K in October, that is a thru, no two ways about it.

Plus side, in the back of the pack you will find the chillest hikers. And you will get to catch Maine in the fall. Just glorious. Enjoy.

A thru hike is when you start at one terminus and hike pretty much continously to the other terminus.

Does a month-plus off meet the definition of "pretty much continously?" Thats up to you to decide. I can guarantee you that this website will not come to an answer that will be agreed upon by all.

I think what is more important - assuming you are attempting to to hike the entire trail - is that you meet the definition of a 2,000 miler.

I've read blogs where students leave the trail, fly home graduate and return to finish. I have read others where they take a "vacation" from being on the trail ( and I mean aruba ) and return in time to finish within the calendar year. Yeah, collect your funds and get back to it.
