when is the best time to begin a SOBO and why? i am thinking late june, but my hiking partner wants to begin as early as possible. also, what are some recommended books/guides i should be reading to prepare for the hike? any helpful comments will be appreciated.

It might be better to wait until summer and two good reasons would be snow melt creating more risky fords and blackflies.

On trail sobo right now. Started the 19th of June. We hit the tail end of blackflies -earlier than that is doable, but it does mean lots of bugs
