low 20s to high 80s, from sunny to rain or even snow. The southern Mtns are quite unpredictable in the sholder seasons. Best to get weather updates right before you leave and pack according +/- 10 degrees.

Average highs and lows in that part of the year for nearby trail towns in that part of North Carolina, according to weather.com, are around 75 for a high and 50 for a low. BUT most of your hiking will be between 4000 and 5000 feet in that part of the trail, most trail towns are 3000 to 4000 feet lower than this, so subtract 3 to 4 degrees for every gain of 1000 feet and you can expect average overnight lows on the trail of 35-40 and average highs of 60-65. You can expect a fair amount of variance from the averages, though, so prepare for some nights to get down around freezing.

flemdawg1...agree with your observations 100% except for the snow. Has it ever snowed along this section of the AT this time of year? :)

That was the 1st week of October last year, so its not entirely unrealistic it could happen a week or 2 earlier.
