I'm looking for a light weight shelter for 1. This will be used in upstate NY in August. I have three requirements:

1. Keep out the rain.
2. Don't break the bank (under $100)
3. MUST keep bugs out. For a camper I'm pretty intolerant of the little things.

I'm open to thinking about tarps with netting

Any thoughts....

must define your idea of "lightweight". Mine would be around 2 lbs or less.

Best lightweight bang for buck ,IMO is the new Six Moon Designs skyscape scout, 34 oz., $125.

You might check out www.tarptent.com (http://www.tarptent.com) as well as www.sixmoondesigns.com (http://www.sixmoondesigns.com) both have tents that should meet your requirements.

Tarps are easy and cheep. I can get a green one at any home depot, Any thoughts on the mosquito net. I was thinking of a Sea to Summit single.

As to the weight I'm going with MuddyWaters suggestion of under 2 lbs.

I would be careful in the hammock arena, you can start off with an inexpensive setup, but it usually leads to bigger and better toys!!!! ;-)

You might want a double net, I have the single and it is tight, though ok for just sleeping under--no floor so you will need a ground cloth. Run some thin elastic, walmart sewing dept, through the existing hem and the net will stay under your pad and bag without being staked out. Run a ridgeline to throw your tarp over and tie the top of the net to it.

A plastic tarp will work but is heavy compared to nylon, even regular coated nylon. And it will be in the landfill while a nylon version is still going strong. And plastic is noisy and hard to work with. The gromets are usually very weak on cheap ones. A better choice would be a regular nylon tarp about 6x8 to 10x12 depending how you use it. Try campmor--$ 20 to 30 should do it but you will like it a lot better.

Love mine... QUICK setup and take down. Very breathable. Super easy to get a tight pitch. 3 stake setup. No bulk so packs easy. I've already had mine in pretty high wind and rain and it seems rock solid. Don't have to worry about finding a tree for a hammock and/or finding a perfect place to tarp if the weather is bad. If you want to spend around 100$ and this be your only sleep system for a while, can't beat it IMO.
