This isn't really for hikers but I know someone out there has the answer.
I am looking for prepackaged meals that have the heat source in the package. I really need it for canoeing where you could actually start the meal in the canoe and eat it as you continue downstream or at worst save the time to boil water.
I did have some of these about 10 or 12 years ago and feel that somebody is still making them. They worked like those hand warmer thingies.

Military MRE's have a chemical reaction type heater for warming the meal. Basically a metal that reacts with water to produce heat. Probably pretty expensive. Try uscalvary.com

I have tried the MREs with dehydrated ramen meals I prepared at home, and they work fine. Light weight and easy to use. No muss, no fuss - and they are light to carry. One per meal so best if you're having just one hot meal per day on the trail. They work with mac and cheese, too. Best used with cozy.

This is not exactly what you asked about, but it might work for you. The Mountain House mountain oven is just slightly larger than one of thier prepackaged meals. I've used it before and it works just fine.

Try going here. They were available at some grocery stores here in FL. a few years ago. The picture on the box looks better than the

meal.http://www.heatermeals.com/

www.readymeal.com (http://www.readymeal.com) has a case of 12 self-heating meals for around $70.

Lots and lots of trash to haul out. I've used Heater Meals before and would not use them again. I'd rather go cookless. I found them lacking.

what kind of hurry could you be in that cannot spare 10 min to boil water and instead pack heavy bulky meals w/lots of trash?

I have used the Mountain House oven several times in the past and I have to say it works great and I recommend it. It seems to be just as fast as my hiking partners who take the time to setup their stoves, boil water, dump it in the MH meal and wait for it to percolate. However, I'm moving to the cookless camp. The MH oven and the meals just take up way too much space in my pack and I wind up with a bunch of garbage to haul out.
