Are there any water sources on the way to springer mt? What about once your on the summit? Thanks, first time hiking on AT, want to know how much water to carry. Going to go up far as I can make camp and come back down in morning, might not make it far up as the summit.

Yeah, there are a couple sources on the way up, one is marked with a sign and is just left of the trail. The other is down over the hill to the right from the first shelter. Also if you happen to take the Hike in trail they gave me permission to fill my bottles in their kitchen. Very nice folks.

Not that difficult. It can be done in a day with time to spare. Eat the breakfast buffet at the lodge, have fun.

Oh, dear God.

What's that mean? He or she is asking a serious question, and yes there are water sources on the trail and summit of Springer.

I have never been a big fan of the approach trail. I would consider driving to the fs42 parking lot and going maybe to Hawk instead of doing the approach trail. There is a good mix of terrain, but quite a bit is downhill or even ground. I did the approach trail once and have refused to ever do it again!

Thanks. Ive been looking into the FS42 road. It sounds good, only 0.9mi to summit Springer from there, thats alot better than 8! You also mentioned Hawk from that road, what does this hike entail length and terran wise? What are my other hiking options starting from FS42? Thanks alot everyone.

As you plan your trip, you might want to consider buying a data book, a Georgia AT Trail Guide or a map (or one of the many other informational books that are available)...the AT Maps and some of the guides even have a trail profile to help you see the elevation changes. Most of your straight forward questions about distance, water, terrain, etc. could be easily answered without having to sort through lots of posts, and you'll have this resource material for future trips. Good luck on your hike!

. . . .what does this hike entail length and terran wise?. . . .Probably the easist section of Georgia. Quick glance (http://www.rei.com/product/780903/rei-sub-kilo-20-sleeping-bag-regular-09-special-buy).

Hooch, lay off. At least ippon is asking for help from a good source. Posts like yours will turn people off from a great site, with great info. Yeah, a search will work too, but here there is more than just maps that not everyone is great at reading.

You could hike Springer to Three Forks on the AT, and return to Springer on the BMT. BMT is nice, you'll have it all to yourself.

Whats a good way to get to the parking lot from Dahlonega? Ive looked at this map but still am unsure. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://stewartholt.csoft.net/AT-Georgia-gm.kmz

I do really want to get some detailed trail/terran maps but i havnt yet been to a place that sells them for the AT area. Id be coming from Dahlonega area, is there anywhere I could stop to find the maps I need?

Lay off? Hooch very simply answered the question, and it IS probably the easiest section of GA trail.

to reach the parking area on FS 42 from Dahlonega:

Travel north on 60 from the Dahlonega square. Turn left on Camp Wausega Rd. Follow to end at Camp Merrill. Turn Right on Cooper Gap rd (dirt) and follow to the top of the mountain. Turn left on FS42 and follow to Springer parking area.

The other road to FS42 from the Dahlonega area (Winding Stair Gap Rd) is in much worse shape and hard to travel (at least it was last time I was there). Use the Cooper Gap Rd.

Try to get maps on-line or maybe at REI. I would not depend on finding the maps in Dahlonega. There is an outdoor outfitter in Dawsonville that may have maps--? but again, would not count on it.

Nothing wrong with the 8.8 mile Approach Trail, I like it. There's water and camping at 4.8 and a shelter with water at 7.7. It's about a 2000' foot climb (850' in the 1st mile) so you'll get a little exercise.

Go to the Appalchain trail Conservancy website. They sell A. T. guide books and A. T. maps for each state or group of states online. Orded there and a few days later you get a nice package in the mail!
