Sometimes it doesn't.

You may be okay in April (mid-to-late) and May, though.

For the most part the weather will be the way you mid to late April. However, last year we got snow I think it was April 12 and it was cold for down here.

I would not hike on the Georgia AT with any thing less than a 20 degree bag until after mid May. It can and does turn cold up on the ridge line very quick until that time.

Try this link it has the averages for the area. Above the "bubles" check record high and record low.

70 degrees? If one wants to wait for seventy degrees before hiking he should consider the Florida trail!

However, I would like to know..around when does the temperature on the AT in georgia get up to 30's at night and 50's in the day? that is real spring weather to me!! late march possibly?

In 03 we experienced some sub 20 degree temps at night in mid March through Georgia. This year, in early January (for the whopping 4 days I hiked) we had 60's during the day and 50's or so at night.

My suggestion is watch the weather in the area for a few weeks before hand, find a period that looks comforting, check the extended forecast again to assure no fronts are moving in, then still carry warm clothing and a 20 degree bag.

I will watch the weather forecast closely in March and hike from Woody Gap to Unicoi Gap when the weather forecast predicts 3 days with relatively warm temperatures and no rain.

Sometimes it rains unexpected and you will be able to call for emergency helicopter evacuation if it gets cloudy :)

I'm not sure which post I originally found this on, but I find it to be pretty neat for planning:

Just put in the location and the date range and poof - there is your temp range! Pretty cool tool if you ask me!

This Page (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hike/plan/temp.html) might just be your pal. Monthly average highs and lows along the whole trail.

This page (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/weather.php?) gives current weather along the whole trail. Click on any of the "current conditions" boxes to get a forecast.

After it warms up a little in the Georgia mountains, we get hellacious thunderstorms, and sometimes tornadoes. So, cold weather might be better hiking.

In mid-April 1984, Georgia was hit with cold rain and sleet (off and on for 2 wks). It snowed on Blood Mountain on April 20th. I made the mistake of starting off with a summer sleeping bag, thinking that I could get away with wearing extra clothes if it really got cold. Big mistake.

Back to my own experience.... we had nice weather predictions in August for our three-and-a-half-day hike from Springer to Neels Gap in GA.

It rained TWICE each day, sometimes SIDEWAYS from the wind, sometimes with really exciting lightning and booming thunder, and the same at least once each night (fortunately we stayed in empty shelters).

One of the three or four reasons for my trail name!

Anyway, be prepared for rain no matter.

We have predictable weather in Georgia???? I didn't know we had seasons at all.

All kidding aside, it's supposed to be near 70 here in NE GA on Tuesday (Feb. 15th) with lows around 40, but in April it might be in the 20s at night and snowing. Who knows????:banana

I started my hike at Springer on Feb 28th. The first week it was actually rather warm - I was wet with sweat. Over one month later the temp got down to about 5 degrees near Roan Mountain and we had almost two feet of snow on the ground. If you want a steady 70 degrees move to Florida and turn on the A/C. Set foot on the A/T in the mountains and you never know what to expect.

In June 04 I hiked from Woody Gap to Neel's Gap. There was a steady light rain most of the trip. At Blood Mountain shelter I had to put on a jacket as it was very cool not to mention wet. On the trip down to Neel's Gap the bottom fell out with a cold rain. The trail was a river and without my hiking poles it would have been difficult. As I finished at Neel's the sun came out it and became quite warm. A 30+ temp. change is not uncommon on the AT.
