Looking through the Sunday paper I saw a coupon for some MetRx protein bars. Apparently these things have about 400 or so calories. That is a ton of power in a small package. Has anyone tried using some of these to up your calorie intake?

The exact amount of carbs, fat, and protein vary from bar to bar, but they are primarily designed for muscle growth and heavy in protein. When I was a young Marine and wanted to maintain muscle mass while I dropped body fat, Met Rx shake powder was something I used.

I wouldn't want these bars as my primary energy source on trail. I'd look for something with more carbs and fat. But on a thru-hike or long section, they might be good once per day to reduce some of the muscle loss I suffered.

I found them too heavy for the nutritional benefit. I used almonds and beef jerky during the day--that was the best nutritional benefit per ounce fo rme.

Some of them actually taste decent. I bought one once in awhile, but the cost vs food ratio just isn't there.
