I read Bill Giffords story on Mr. Doyle in this months new Backpacker issue. I know there are some folks out there that have run into him and I'm sure some that would like a few words with him face to face. I'm curious what you have to say. I have never met the man myself although I have heard the stories on WB and from other publications and of course hearsay.

Anyone care to comment?

unfortunately, the previous thread about this article was closed, mostly because Warren can be such a controversial topic. I know him, like him, accept his idiosyncrasys, and thought the article was well done, and fair. The article presented the many facets of Warren. Warren doesn't really care if you like him or hate him. He is very much his own person. The article even quoted his most vocal adversary, Baltimore Jack. Whatever you may think about his methods, he certainly knows and loves the Appalachian Trail.

There was an article in the current backpacker magazine. While I can say that his method does not appeal to me for hiking the trail, I do understand why some people would want to do it that way. I really don't want a schedule when I am out in the woods. That is part of the relaxing aspect of it and why I enjoy my time away from it all.

Then why don't you? He's not that hard to contact, he's not in some secret bunker.

There is a youtube video of contra dancing with him in it. Should be able to find it with a little creative searching. Maybe include ALDHA in the search? I honestly don't remember how I found it.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. The backpacker article referred to him as a "controversial figure" and "bizarre". AT 'purists' contend his methods of commercialized expeditions is cheating. I am looking to make light conversation about the man and the article from folks that know him and have run into him, I don't hardly know him.

My point of view on his methods are easy to talk about. I'm old school, I believe in hike your own hike, I believe in carrying your own weight and making the trip your own, not someone elses.

I liked the article, he seems like an odd fellow but very likeable. I'd almost be interested in his seminar.

hahaha, you say hike your hike and then proceed to try to define how someone should hike?

hahaha, that's funny to me

HYOH - thru hike, section hike, nobo, sobo, flip-flop, white blaze, blue blaze, yellow blaze, green blaze, pink blaze, purple blaze, old school, new school, pack mule, gram weenie, ....

His group slackpacks the whole thing with a schedule, Jenn just did the same thing. More power to them. HYOH YMMV ICUPN

The trail was never designed for thru hiking purists, it was designed to give access to as many people as possible into the woods for a "wilderness experience".as was previously mentioned, Warren Doyle is good for the AT.funny that the same people that bark about commercialism should covet the 2000 miler patch as much as they do.Its all good.

WB has run a number of threads concerning Mr. Doyle’s activities both and on and off the trail as well as threads covering his philosophy. These threads very often become uncivil. Several of these threads are locked, including his advice column and threads on the ATI. WB in the past has attempted to work with all parties to elevate the dialogue but we were unsuccessful. There is scant evidence that a thread about Mr. Doyle will magically become a civil discussion. This is due in part to his critics and in part due to his own behavior here on WB. We cannot continue to expend extensive moderation effort on threads involving Mr. Doyle, particularly given the various topics generated by the article in Backpacker Magazine.
