I am visiting some friends in Charlottesville this week. i want to head to the AT on Thursday and do a little trail magic for thrus and sectioners, but i am not real familiar with road crossings and shelters near Charlottesville. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

The closest the AT gets to C'Ville is Rockfish Gap at around 25 miles west on I-64 exit 99 . Look for the sign to Shenandoah National Park. There's a pull off for cars on the right after crossing the Rt.250 overpass

** Check with the Park Rangers on duty at the Rockfish Gap Entrance Station before doing any trail magic.
This is not only courteous but also likely a formality.

This is a nice idea but at this date, you won't meet a lot of thru-hikers.....the Northbounders are way up North by now, the Southbounders aren't there yet. If you see someone in a backpack, by all means help them out, this is a really nice thing to do, but it'll be section-hikers and weekenders you're helping; there simply aren't a lot of thru-hikers (of either direction) around Waynesboro right now.
