View Full Version : Names inspired by the AT

My wife and I thru hiked in 05 and are having our 3rd child. We purposefully don't know the sex and are brainstorming some good AT inspired names- could be the name of a special place on the trail or person associated with the trail. Here's what we're considering but want to hear alternate ideas. Fire away! Boys:RoanGraysonBentonAveryGirls:KatahdinLaurelShe nandoah

That child (Georgia Maine) is never going to forgive them when she grows up! ; - o

There are some beautiful places as well as names on the AT. I like some of the ones you have picked out already. (Grayson and Laurel)

If it is a boy, you could name it after the 'villes - Dale, Bill, or Trout.

I worked with a gentleman who did this. His wife was pregnant before they even started the trail (they didn't know until later). Thus he, his wife and unborn daughter completed the trail. this was in the early 1970's.

The daughter of the aforementioned colleague is now in her 30's. AFAIK she is happy.

Better the child be named Georgia Maine than Tequila like one little girl I met...named in honour of what her mother was drunk on when she conceived. Course they called their son Doobie (not sure what was on his birth certificate), so y'all know where their minds were!!

Given the 50/50 gender odds, I'm thinkin' it's a good thing Max Patch is already taken.

Not exactly on the AT , but how about : " Pamola " . Could then be called " Pam " with no trouble .
Most of the Whites are male - names . On the side of the Dudley Trail on Katahdin is " Index Rock ";
is that a name ? Maybe : " Del Gap " ? DVW

I would say Lone Wolf but then the child would have to go through life trying to live up to those expectations......

small bird who flies fast

Unfortunately, he thinks it would be more likely to be selected in earlier times.

Some really good ones there, thanks WBers. I admit chunky gal was already considered but chunky didn't seem to be in any of the baby name books.

Take a look at a list of the trail shelters. There are plenty of REAL names to choose from there. No need to torment the child, at least until the teen years.

I've always liked many of the plant-derived names given girls that continue to get better as those given them grow older or should we say better with age.

Like Poison Ivy or Bitter root?

No, silly. One of my neighbors is named Iris and one of my coworkers, Rose to name just two examples. I am sure you can think of others.

There once was someone who posted here named Poison Ivy, but I don't believe her parents gave her that name. Some parents have come up with stranger names for their children.

"Blaze" is a good one.

I was wondering, if a kid is born with a trail name, what do they choose for a trail name?

I think Baxter would be a great name.

OMG... this has got to be my favorite whiteblaze thread!!! Don't think that I haven't thought about this (or researched it more after seeing this post). I submit names that I feel are original, memorable places on the trail, and still a bit off-beat and super cool. We have umpteen family names to work through when the time finally comes and we probably won't get this far, so feel free to steal and borrow. BTW, Odyssa is also very pretty ; )

Boys:
Baxter, ME (I mentioned this possible baby name to my husband the last time we were there!)
Grafton, ME
Zealand, NH
Kinsman, NH (personal favorite)
Bromley, VT
Stratton, VT
Grey (as in Greylock), MA
Dalton, MA (sounds new englandy, doesn't it?)
Becket, MA (this one too!)
Everett, MA (... a third.)
Kent, CT (...and it keeps coming)
Culver, NJ (let's be honest, I would never name a kid after a landmark in NJ)
McAfee... Mac? VA
Bastian, VA (I think this one sounds really cool. sorta french)
Grayson, VA (love it, but starting to become overused)
Hampton, TN
Jones, NC (falls. off trail, but it still counts)
Roan, NC/TN
Carver, NC/TN
Max, NC (prone to balding)
Cosby, NC (In the smokies and better than clingman)
Wesser...Wes? NC
Siler, NC
Tray, GA
Justus, GA
Others:
Miles (always a favorite - good for man's best friend too)

Girls:
Jo-Mary, ME
Eliza Brook, ME (double name - extra points)
Windsor, PA (as in Windsor Furnace)
Caledonia... Calie? PA
Harper, WV (Harper's Ferry)
Ashby, VA
Meadow, VA (Big Meadows. Yeah, I know, I'm not crazy about it either.)
Laurel, TN (falls and shelter)
Doll, NC (potential to be flat, just like me ; )
Tanyard, NC
Bly, NC
Others:
Appal (pronounced ap-pal... I know a thru-hiker who already used this as a middle name for a girl)
Shenan, VA (like Shannon, but different and better. The -doah is optional. Let's be honest, it will be shortened anyway.)
Bear (It's a little left field, I met a little girl named Bear on the CT Trail and she was the cutest thing ever!)

Both my son's and daughter's middle name is Bigelow. Both of their initials then are B.B.B. -- has a nice ring to it. It took a while for the daughter to confess to friends that she was named after a mountain, but she likes it now.

I forgot to mention the middle name we chose was Everett. Roan because we had some great trail magic from a family with young kids and it was a really good memory. Plus he is a bigger boy, and Roan fit better than Blaze in that respect. I do think Blaze Miles is an awesome choice, under different circumstances.

Blaze Miles would be an awesome name.....for a drag queen!~
