Does anyone have a comprehensive list of the closest "stops" for the entire AT that Greyhound and Amtrak make? :-?

Well, I can probably fill in Amtrak real easy. Closest Amtrak stop to the AT is Harpers Ferry. Other commuter rail stops include Harpers Ferry for the Md commuter line, Bear Mountain, and the Appalichian stop in NY on weekends.

Many people start by taking Amtrak to Gainesville GA. And I think Amtrak also has a train that stops in White River Jct, just south of Hanover.

Seriously, you are going to have to do some work. After you figure out what part(s) of the trail you want to do, check Greyhound here (http://www.greyhound.com/) and/or Amtrak here. (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage) Only you can decide which of the countless combinations of locations and times will work for you.

The "Thru-hiker's Handbook" and the "Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker's Companion" list all services, including transportation, in towns along the trail. These books are available at the A.T. bookstore here. (http://www.atctrailstore.org/index.cfm) The ATC has public transportation info available online. (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/hike/plan/trans.html) Good luck

Charlottesville VA isn't too bad for Amtrak, especially if you have a student at UVA.

But using Amtrak may be one of those things to get done very soon, if the Federal Budget succeeds in cutting out the subsidies.

Thanks for the info! Will scour the books to make a comprehensive list. Your advice is appreciated!

In Virginia, the Greyhound bus service in the I-81 corridor (which runs roughly parallel to the A.T. through the Shenandoah Valley) provides excellent connections to Dulles Airport or downtown D.C. Bus #1534 runs up the valley to D.C. in the morning and Bus #3926 repeats the journey in the evening. I’ve used this service several times and it is perfectly safe and reliable.
