Do you need them?? I'm doing a 10 day w/ wife in the Natahala NF in early Sept. Your thoughts?

I have a Wally closed-cell pad that I use. I just lean it up against the nearest tree, log, rock, etc. It doubles in my hammock for insulation or padding as well.

They're not needed, but can sure be appreciated. Much like toting coffee. Not a requirement, but a well enjoyed luxury.

I bought a couple of these:

They aren't cheap, but they're very light weigh, extremely packable and are pretty versatile/comfy.

Big Agnes make a 6 oz chair (Cyclone SL) that uses you sleeping pad. Not needed, but certainly comfortable.

If you want to carry the weight of a chair for 10 days go ahead. I don't know anyone that would, so I can't say to take them.

I've had a total knee replacement and find it easier to sit in a chair of some kind. For that reason I use my sleeping pad, folded in half, in a converter kit; essentially a sleeve for the pad w/ two side straps for tightening it up. The weight is negligible and it makes me a lot happier at the end of a long day.

I use the thermarest version that fits with my air mattress. Love it would never think of hiking without it. makes life so much better on the trail. The little extra weight is worth it in my opinion.

If I am on a trip where we spent a LOT of time in camp, socializing around the fire, I def bring a chair. It is often torture for me to sit without a chair.
If I have doing big miles (hiking most of the day, eating, and going go bed) I do not bring a chair.

Naw !! Xtra weight and really not needed.
When I'm ready to relax I sometimes will prop my pack up against a log , lean back using it as a back rest and I'm good to go.

I have a lightweight (16 0z) 3-leg stool that I will take on weekend hikes but not on a long distance trip. However if it would make the wife more comfy maybe I would take it for her.

A tree serves me well. :)
BUT I don't go anywhere without some kind of seat pad. Either the z-rest seatpad or the Thermarest inflatable one. Very few ounces and gives a little cushioning.
